Well, there’s still about 15 hours to go. It’s the sort of timescale folk like Chris Nevard might finish a whole layout in!

Never got started. Life and locos got in the way.

I got started but as you say Peter, life & locos got in the way and let’s face it the locos are MUCH more interesting than track and grass!

Here on my very basic photo shelf are two projects which have progressed since the Summer ended. The pug is a rebuild of James Stirling’s 187 class for the City of Glasgow Union suburban passenger traffic but modelled as seen at Dumfries in 1906 where she was mostly a shunting engine with the odd trip to Moniaive on the Cairn Valley light railway. The loco is completed but awaits a bit of subtle weathering. The other engine is an interloper from the Caley, a 960 class 0-4-2 as rebuilt by McIntosh. I like 0-4-2s and this one looks so archaic it cries out to be modelled even though the curly footplate and curvaceous cab are quite challenging.

I do like to see pre-grouping models, especially ones from the ‘less popular’ companies. Very nice Ian.

I got started, but so much more to do...

At least I can be confident that it’s mouse-free.

I need to fit the right hand wing walls and arch properly, then ballast, and do the cess, some handrails over the bridge, and then “scenicify” it a bit, I recall that some DAS kaninchen were on the menu... I also want to have a go at gorse, and a tree or two.

Been busy with the loco shed (on my PD thread on RMW) which is making slow progress. 50 warm white led lamps in domed pendant lampshades arrived in the morning post, and I’ve just lasered the trial smoke hoods and the shed doors, along with a pair of cradles to hold the roof upside down whilst I fit the hoods and lights.

Was looking forward to Reading tomorrow, but will probably not attend due to a stinking head cold, I hope everyone has a good time.

Best

Rather better photos, with a bit of light.

I mixed some Indian ink with the latex for sticking down the ballast, in the hope it would darken the shadows. I hadn’t thought of it running off and creating the rather odd effect. The bit in the middle is ok, and will not cause a problem, but the three streams on the left will need a bit more attention. Should have tried to wash it out when I first saw it. Ho hum.

I suspect a combination of some dried earth, and more grass, with some gorse or somesuch will help. It’s a learning process anyway.

Time for a tree or three...

Nice photographic backdrop - English Channel looking south? I see no ships!

If so - a bit of a menace as you can only take good photos either in the early morning or late evening sun.

I have this problem as my house and garden face due south. The north side of my house is built directly into a hill.

Spot on. Arc of view from the Varne light vessel to Rye hill, including Cap Gris Nez, Boulogne and Dungeness LH.

Ships are variable, I suspect to do with the tides at Rotterdam, Felixstowe, Thameshaven, etc., though I’ve never bothered to work it out. The Eastbound ones are too far south to see, normally, even though we’re about 35mASL.

We do see some interesting stuff. The range boats for the Hythe and Lydd ranges go past most mornings. Border force are quite frequently anchored in Hythe bay, and if its blowing, even quite big stuff parks there for a while - not big like Mikoo’s box boats, but... and we saw the Queen Elizabeth a few days ago. Very distinctive outline! The AIS simply said “Government vessel” which was a bit dull. When there was a deep sea tug stationed in the Channel, that would often be anchored just off Sandgate. Not sure if they slipped ashore in the jollyboat for a snifter or two.

Occasionally we get to see something something really unusual/spectacular, like Mickoo’s cranes, or a jack-up rig on tow.

Currently the AIS says there are 18 vessels potentially in view - I can actually only see five, though I imagine if I went upstairs with the binoculars I could find a few more.

I can live with the photographic challenges :). It’s particularly good for the solar panels!

Cheers
Simon
