Hi,

Finishing the chassis off...

The inside motion is all removable. The driving wheel springs on the chassis unscrew and the axle is dropped with the hornblocks. The slidebar unit unscrews from the top of the chassis.

The finished chassis all back together.

In truth, I started with the finished chassis and stripped it back for painting, taking photos as I went.

Moving back to the body.

The boiler is straightforward, and has plates on the inside with the boiler band cleat lugs on. It took a little bit to make sure the lugs passed cleanly through the cladding, but other than that, there were no issues.

The boiler bands will go on as part of the paint process.

The firebox is a pretty robust affair, and a decision needs to be made as to whether the whistles are mouned on the firebox or cab roof. The safety valve base and casing are gold-plated and fitted after painting. It does mean the lever is vulnerable in the meantime.

Is there any chance the half etched band locators will show through under the transfer paper?

JB.

Hi JB,

I did wonder about that. However, no builder has commented to me that it has caused a problem, and on the many photos I have seen of finished models, there is no evidence of any distortion of the lining.

Hi,

The final part of the loco body was the completion of the footplate. The reversing lever is left off until after painting as it is polished metal as is one other handle which has to be attached once the cab is on. The 4 main springs and the axlebox covers are also left off until final assembly.

And here is one of it mostly together

That's it until after it comes back from the painter.

Richard, very nice work in deed.

I was wondering how you produced the widened ends of the handrails. I have taken a detail from one of your photos and added an arrow to indicate the part that I mean.

Hi Ian,

I use a small section of telescopic tube. The one end of the tube is cleaned up square and soldered on in precisely the right place. The other end is cut and filed back to just give the small 'ring' shown.

It doesn't take long to do, but is a nice finishing touch to the handrail (where such ends exist!)

Would it be possible to take a photo from above, showing how visible the inside motion is, please?

Hi Geoff,

The loco is currently with the painter, so I can't take any more photos until I get it back. I've just checked, and I don't have a suitable photo.

I will be taking a good few more pictures for my records once it's back together, so I'll post one then.
