Just an update on replacing my old DeVilbis spraygun. It has served my business well in use almost daily, and it looks it!
WEB Spray equipment 0.jpg

A comparison between the Sparmax GP50 and GP850 airbrushed with triggers. A top-mounted large cup is what I am used to. An air hose with 1/8" connector is required for the Sparmax guns...
WEB Spray equipment 5 jpg..jpg

The GP50 nozzle. The cup is side mounted. I found it prevented me seeing the nozzle. Also the cup could swivvel on its mounting if not kept screwed tight. The contents of even the larger cut were insufficient for spraying an 7mm scale model...

The more sustantial nozzle on the GP850. This is the round shaped one. It also comes with a fan shaped nozzle. This gun also has a stronger spring so there is more resistance on the trigger ~ which is similar to my old Devilbis....

I am out of my comfort zone regarding these type of spray guns, how similar are they to an airbrush ? Obviously you can cover a much larger area with them but how fine can they spray ?

Sparmax airbrushes appear to be based around a similar tool. The SP-35 has a 0.35mm nozzle, while the SP-20X has a 0.2mm nozzle. Both have the finger action button on top familiar to airbrushes. The GP-50 has a 0.5mm nozzel, but differs in having trigger action. One could probably sign ones name with the first two.

I found an airbrush about fountain pen size with button on top too small and fiddly to handle. But any of the above mentioned jobs would be fine for 2mm to 4mm scale models. The larger the area one needs to cover, the larger the container needs to be to feed the gun. For 7mm scale, I recommend the GP-850. I think the cup is a 4 oz, but maybe larger.

Also a larger needle and cap are an advantage for spraying larger models as they deliver more paint. When using cellulose, I find it advisable to keep all the paint on the model wet at the same time, as overspray will melt into wet paint and dry with a glass-like finish. But of course, the paint also needs to be of the right consistency. It is no help me saying mix paint & thinners 50/50, because paint straight from the tin differs in consistency from thick treacle to pretty damn thin. A good test though is to pour your thinned paint back into a container and see how much is left in the spraygun cup. If quite a lot is settled in the bottom, then your paint is too thick. It would probably give an orange-peel finish when dry.

Too thin is just as bad as it will require several coats. The only time I use thicker than usual paint is when spraying carmine red (blood) on top of BR cream on coaches. Red is pretty transparent, yet I want it to cover in one go so I can remove masking tape and it wont leave a dried cusp between the two colours.

I almost forgot to mention the GP-850 comes with two tips. The fan tip sprays a larger area, but i have no experience with this type and changed my gun to the round tip as soon as it arrived.

I hope this helps.

Hi Larry,

Thank you for spending the time to explain the differences, certainly food for thought so they say. I also find my airbrush a bit on the small size and quite fiddly, and I’m forever topping up the cup so once the weather warms up I’ll have a look at what deals are around.

Cheers,

Martyn.

Hi Larry.

Sorry to read that you’re struggling with the 7mm design again; great scale but it does take up a lot of space.

If you’re thinking of reverting to 4mm scale, have a look at these: GWR 7800 - Manor Class

I’ve always been fascinated by the Manor - and I know that they were part of the furniture on the Cambrian so perhaps you might be interested - so much so that I’ve ordered one.

I’ve no connections with the company but they’re a welcoming, knowledgable bunch who are only too willing to assist.

You’re probably aware, Larry, as a I know you keep abreast of these matters, but just in case you might have overlooked it.

Best wishes.

Jonte

Hi Jonte,

hope you are well.

Don’t forget that Dapol are also bringing out the Manor in 4mm - another case of the bus syndrome - you wait all this time for one to come along then suddenly there are two!

Stay safe and well

regards

Mike

Hi Mike

Yes, fine thank you.

Hope and trust all is well with your good self too.

Bachman make fine models indeed, and I recall it being mooted that they were planning on releasing one, but as always seems the case: as and when :)

I saw this manufacturers promotion and was particularly impressed by - of all things - the fineness of the coupling rods!

And as mentioned, they were very helpful when I enquired after a particular example: they seemed to know every detail. The only downside was that this particular is not available: yet (the main difference concerned the tender which I knew nothing about). However, I’m assured that there are plans to release it in due course.

In the meantime, I’ve order an interim version!

Cheers, Mike.

Jonte

Apologies: I meant to say Dapol.

Hi Jon, My post hadn't been on long when I deleted it in case it upset anyone, but i have been smoked out now... :p

Yes, I have been reshuffling track struggling to get what I wanted in the confines of the shed for weeks, but I think today was the final straw. My two favourite O gauge locos will be put in display cases, both of them presents from good friends.

I posted something on the new 4mm 'Manor' on "Talk" a few days ago. It is a loco I have been hoping to see in rtr form for a long time. This and a new Dapol 53xx are a must!

Sincerest apologies, Larry, for outing you ;); I did wonder when I returned with the link to post whether I’d dreamt it ...

Apologies also for overlooking your post on the matter in ‘Talk’, but I thought it wouldn’t have past you by  I’ll go and dig it out.

Will keep a keen eye posted for developments.

Best wishes,

Jon

Thanks Jonte. I was only jesting. I came clean with my two best pals last night. Nothing 4mm/OO will be happening soon as I don't want anything to destroy my current soldering mood. While I can't get even a skeleton 7mm version of Llanfyllin on my shed baseboard, 4mm will allow a a full-fat version plus a welcome re-slimming of the baseboard.

If anyone is interested, the 7mm buildings will be offered for sale in April. I need to replicate them in 4mm before then.

Put them in a box and hide them away for 6 months... Then make a decision to sell them or not!

Did you see you can order either hand?
I didn't realise it meant a particular item could be purchased either handed. Just so I can make comparisons with what I built in 7mm, I wonder if you can let me have the 7mm footprint of the building minus steps please.
