Heather - Apologies! Every time I went out to the workshop I forgot to check the number of the HMRS transfer sheet. I remembered yesterday. It's 14.

Just heard from the client.

He thinks the set numbers on the ends are way too big. Being a Suvvern Noob, I don’t know any better, but I have to agree. I reckon Fox have them wrong. I’m going to sort that out when they reappear on the bench. I’m wondering if I might get away with using loco numbers…

Get yourself some white waterslide transfer paper (inkjet or laser, it does not matter in this case) and cut new numbers on the Silhouette.

The image below shows some "1" first class designators as fixed to windows produced in 4mm using this method. From memory they were mirrored so they could be applied behind the glazing:

Thanks Brian!

I am still considering options on this. I think I can get away with loco cab numbers.

I certainly think you can - that's what I used in 4mm and they look right. I have to remove them and renumber, as it happens, but not until I've built the other half of the set!

Thanks Mike and Adam. I will use the cutter technique one day, but I have to admit to poor results when I try to paint the transfer film I have. I’ll need to invest in better quality, I think.

I reckon I have loco numbers that will fit the bill. Once I manage to get my head back into SR mode, I’ll measure things up.

Today, though, I shall be experimenting making paint masks for a certain Bristol Bombay.

Weathering towards the end of life, tired, grubby, but otherwise cared for. We may wait for the other coaches he has/wants so I can do them all as a set. That might still be a way off, what with the way of pandemics and stuff.

Right, back to the North Eastern!

Sorry to hear that Heather but the numbers being too big was my immediate and subsequent impression too. Should be 9" as mentioned.

The ones above say they are 4.66mm high which should be just right for 9". Fox also do set numerals 7mm high which scale to 12", so I suspect this is the pack you got?:

Edit to insert correct image.

I got the latter sheet because it seemed right at the time. I should have gone for the smaller size. As you see, definitely sold as 7mm scale. I wonder what the prototype for the 12in version was. Oh well.

It’s a little moot now, but I won’t use any more of that sheet in the foreseeable. It’s probably much more likely I’d use my new Cameo cutter toy and make my own paint stencils instead. I’m having a play with creating paint stencils for the Bombay, and it’s quite impressive.

Graham Hitchen kindly cut the transfers for my riding & tool vans on his Silhouette.

I had previously painted the transfer film with Halfords spray paint.

It worked very well. Certainly a practical proposition.

They were also etched into the glass on both sides. We have original GNR compartment droplights at Kidderminster with the original etchings still present with a strict instruction to be used only in absolute dire emergencies. We also have original 1941 GWR etched windows on 7284 that have the 1 etched in.

Sorry to divert Heather's thread but I don't think these are the same thing. The white "1"s were transfers 10" high added during WW2 for visibility in the blackout. I think other regions did the same.

With the bench slowly reappearing from under a pile of broad gauge coaches, I’ve resurrected the thread to document replacing the large set numbers.

Despite having had a fair coat of gloss varnish, the transfers delaminated quite easily on the application of a sharp curved scalpel blade. Some paint also came away, annoyingly. So, a careful brushed application of Precision gloss black has been made, which will now rest for as long as it needs to harden. Then, replacement numbers, more varnish, then weathering.

I don’t know why I’m afraid of doing the weathering. I had the chance to review some of my portfolio of builds earlier, and many of those were weathered. In fact, I surprised myself at how good some of them looked. I think I just need to get over my worry and just bloomin' do it!

Right folks, time for replacement numbers. Rummaging in my stock, I found these three variations on a theme, intended for 7mm scale steam loco numbers. They scale at 10 inches, well the top rows of the far right set do anyway. The rest of the coach lettering has been done with the off-white/cream like the right hand set. I have seen examples of set numbers in a golden yellow, but I don’t think that would be appropriate, so to my eye the colours on the right hand sheet suit.

Water. I need water. And a fine brush. Back soon.
