Tales from The Room of Doom. Dipping a toe in various bucolic backwaters.

Hi Rob
Can I ask why you dropped the idea of having a platform at the back?

Good question, well presented.

I realised that I had, somehow placed it too far from the trackside..My mistake and really no time to rectify so it had to go. It was a pity as the W&M Railbus looked really good alongside it !

Nothing wrong with an unfinished layout going to a show - I've done so in the past. It lets the attendees see a layout in progress and allows you to talk about how you reached this stage, materials used and what comes next.
Quite so - I remember seeing Barry Norman's Petherick when it was just track, plywood and white polystyrene at the Nottingham show.

I respectfully disagree Dave. I have never been inspired by unfinished layouts at shows, and expecting visitors to pay to look at bare plywood always strikes me as a bit of a cheek. I have a wood merchants just five minutes drive away from home with the added bonus that they don't charge for entry!

There is also the problem of over exposure of a layout before it has even been completed. My previous club kept exhibiting a layout in various stages of construction. When eventually finished and shown as complete it drew comments such as "Oh, not that old thing again!"

Show me the completed layout to inspire me as to what I can achieve!

Sorry, Terry: I’m not laughing at your point which as valid as anyone else’s, but the wood yard line tickled me pink :))

Apologies for a bit of thread hijack, but I think Copenhagen Fields would never be at the stage it is now if we had waited to exhibit it complete. There have always been finished sections and areas to be worked on. Admittedly, nowadays those are fairly hard to spot, but for a long while there were quite large areas of ‘Antelope brown’, for which we thank the forbearance of visitors. Equally, we take care not to over-expose the layout, whilst there is a type of viewer who looks out for what is new - it rarely attends consecutive shows in exactly the same condition.

Well,

Unfinished that it was, Owl Lane has been pretty well received over the weekend. The idea of the black background has gone down well and I'm sufficiently encouraged to try it again, on a future project. It even collected a few votes from visitors in their vote for best layout !

Minor details aside, I need to look at the installation of DCC. The weekend was muddled through on DC but I know things would have been easier on DCC, for which the layout was originally set out to use and would have given the option to operate from the front, which I did miss.

So, an encouraging start.

Well, a busy couple of weeks since the last post, and now into the week before SWAG, which is a week today in fact.

Next week will see me working Mon- Thursday at L&B and a quick refresh to Owl Lane, which got a bit damp loading at Nailsea. Nothing dramatic but a touch up is required here and there for the black paint as it is off to SWAG as a static display.

In the meantime, there are a few bits and bobs to attend to, including a spot of weathering ( first loco in something like 4 yrs ! ).

This little chap is just about done....

There is still a bit of tidying up here and there, along with the air tanks to re-attach.

They are Dapol's new 517 0.4.2t and what little beauties they are. They run as well as they look thanks in no small part to the springing on one set of the drivers.

Now to work out what to do with them but any potential layout is some way away. There is a queue !

That is nice to know.
After buying the new Dapol Terriers a few years ago I have avoided all Dapol locos but 1159 is very tempting.....

I have a question.......

Coupling the 517 up to a Rapido Evolution GWR Brake 3rd shows that the buffer height is lower on the 517.

1000032232.jpg

Is this correct?

Comparing other locos against the coach, the buffer height matches, so the coach appears correct, certainly consistent with other stock.

Is the 517 simply a small loco ?

Is it the same at the front of the loco?
