Try the Breakdown Crane Association... or wait until the owner of GWR No.2 happens by ('cos he is a WT member).

My apologies for not mucking in to this thread earlier! I have only just spotted it (alas I am unable to check all the forums as often as I would like).

The first photo in the thread shows RS1075/30, which ended its working life allocated to Cambridge. This is not recorded in Brownlie, but is verified by observatioons reported in Railway Observer at the time and now posted on the BDCA website.

The RCTS photo (http://www.rcts.org.uk/features/mysteryphotos/show.htm?img=66-59-12&serial=6) is the former RS1076/30, which was allocated to Shrewsbury and numbered 11 in GW style. There are records suggest that it was returned to BR(M) (and reallocated its original number) in Jan 1963, however there are photos of it at Shrewsbury in "the mid '60s" and the earliest photo I have found of it back at Crewe are dated August 1967 (it was withdrawn two years later from Crewe).

The Deltic photo (http://www.napier-chronicles.co.uk/13_4-7-79.htm) will be York's ADRC96709, not long after its conversion from steam to diesel-hydraulic power.

Roger

Today I got a copy of Peter Tatlow's Railway Breakdown Cranes volume 2. It's excellent and is full of information, drawings and pictures. Watch this space for a birth of a crane......

I got a Tatlow crane book last week, and yes it is a great work and nicely printed. I'm looking forward to the eventual publishing of vol 1 already :))

Volume 1 is already published, out for some time now and you can get it a bit cheaper on Ebay if you shop around.

Oh my - how ever did I miss that? I've been very patiently waiting for the publishing of these thpoopsmiley1.gif and got the impression from IRS that vol 1 was just released, so I ordered a copy. I just assumed Phil had made a typo! Smiley blush.gif Oh no - more expenditure now !

It was interesting to see a lovely shot of the stricken 47 500 as the frontispiece in the March Rail Express magazine, during the process of it being lifted back on the rails by the Bescot- and Wigan-based Cowans Sheldon diesel hydraulic 75tonners.

Made me wonder if there was any mileage in producing a kit, were it not that it'd be a s*d to design and b*&&er to build...

I have a 75 tonner in build, I was given the old Roger Murry kit when it 1st came out, a bunch of crap castings nothing square and a lot to put right, so I started scratch building it a few years ago, once I have got the jib right I can complete it, transfers i purchaced fro scale model transfers before he gave up, and a disk of at least 50 photos around one.
Drawings I got for this crane came from Cowans Boyd kept a copy and swopped a set for a 14'' hold and fold from Pete Waterman, who has the crane in Crewe.

Ian,

Yes, the castings struck me as being particularly awful. I'd certainly have been interested in a copy of that CD though! Not sure what crane Pete's got, but it's not one of the ones I'm referring to. Of the 6 built (ADRC96710 - 96715), three are in service, one stored and two scrapped.

C'mon Roger, we need enlightening!

Thank you Steph and Roger, I've confirmed the crane I'm after is indeed RS1075/30.

Phil,
I've just seen a posting on the BDCA 'site; "There is a two-page article in the January edition of Railway Bylines featuring three good photos of the BR(W) Salop area crane, No 11 from Shrewsbury (the former LMS RS1076/30)." This is in the same series as you 'target', so it might be worth trying to find a back issue?

It's ADRC96719, ex-Cowans Sheldon steam crane converted to a 76t diesel. If it's the case that the Roger Murray kit reproduces this style of crane, then it's not the same as I was suggesting. I was wondering about the 75t telescopic jib jobbies that were built as diesel-hydraulic in the 70s...

If anyone with a copy of the vol 2 book has any drawings or nice pics of 45ton Ransome & Rapier steam crane i would be interested in some scans please.

For those as may be interested...

I had the opportunity to have a quick look round Haworth yard (Keighley and Worth Valley Railway) on Sunday last and came across their steam crane in a certain state of overdress i.e. tarped over. With her boiler out, I'm hoping this is a restoration rather than anything more serious. Anyway, here's some shots from angles you normally wouldn't be able to get.
