Well it’s been an age this I posted anything meaningful on WT, a very busy back end of 21 with the day job meant limited time at the bench so every spare moment was put to cracking on with modelling which meant no time for taking progress shots I’m afraid.

So to the thread title; I’m sweeping up what has been on the bench and what’s on the bench now.
4037 South Wales Borderers - A JLTRT Castle and Collett tender (Ex Malcolm Mitchell kits)
5999 Wollaton Hall - A JLTRT Hall and Collett Tender

So where we’re up to right now is 4037 is complete and has gone to @warren haywood for paint and 5999 is on the bench and I’m going to attempt to give more of a blow by blow account. First some shots of the completed Castle. Being an original Mitchell kit everything comes in the box so you have the option to build as Mr Mitchell intended, which is the road I took. The instructions were dated to say the least, with some pages missing, luckily @Dan Randall and Peter Sylvester were a great help with pictures of their model builds

Unfortunately the customer didn’t want working inside motion and I was unable to get my hands on an SDK for either loco so it’s pretty much an out of the box build with a few additions here and there. Hopefully an update to follow soonish on 5999,

Cheers

Just getting it prepped for paint and thought you had made an error, no beading on the cab front! Looking at photos I see this is correct for a few castles Any one know the reason for this, I’m guessing ex Stars that had the beading removed? But not sure

First batch of castles up to 5012 didn’t have the cab beading as did the stars and star rebuilds, luckily the Mitchell kits have both cab sides as an option.
Fantastic build, I also have 4037 being built for myself at the moment but with a Hawksworth tender.

Yep, covered it already, 4037 didn’t have the brass cab beading and the customer wanted the Collett tender which she ran with lates 50’s.
Thanks for the kind comments chaps :thumbs:

Just a quick question, in the absence of JLTRT SDK’s and anything surplus can anyone recommend a supplier of a suitable axle box spring/cast brake gear for 5999 please ?

Little bit of an update as promised on 5999 in an attempt to give a more blow by blow account. I’ve made good head way in the footplate, the basics of which are a very nice fold up affair and the jig makes for a solid square platform. The construction relies on a number of overlays on top of the basic frame. All fits extremely well with only minor fettling here and there. I’ve made a little addition on some scrap etch between the splashers faces in order to make fitting much easier. A little tip picked up from Mr Kevin Wilson and it made life extremely easy, definitely worth taking the time to file up the scrap etch square and fit between faves on a temporary basis. This stage has been done using my toughened glass as a base to ensure absolute square and level throughout. A couple of at the bench progress shots;

And with all the overlays fitted that I can. Splasher fronts are loose to make things easier for the painter ( didn’t do this on 4037 sorry @warren haywood ). I now need to fit the cab before I can for the remaining splasher and combined fire iron tunnel.

I’ve made a good start on the can which is made up of an inner frame and then outer detail overlays. Cab sides will be fitted last, here’s the cab about ready for fitting and then further detailing. There is a horrible hole where the etch has been over cooked, hoping to fill this once the window frames are fitted

The castings are nice and I like the way the reverser fits through the spectacle plate JLTRT:D

:thumbs:A bit more progress to report, I’ve got as much done on the cab as I can at this stage and have got that fitted, then the cab sides followed and the remaining splashers. One frustrating thing about the kit is the instructions, they’re based on the modified hall and are just a series of pictures. They show etches parts to make up the fire iron tunnel which don’t exist in this kit so I was stuck without a top! I made one up from 10thou brass no issue but it just takes a little longer. I then went onto removing the temp splasher fitting guides taking cake to warm with a blow lamp indirectly so they just fell out and the splasher didn’t ping off anywhere. Next job was to test for the blue lump so a couple of strokes with the file across the WM saddle and all got sat in place, I was very pleased to see all fits very nicely

I've got as boiler just like that in the box for the Finney7 Hall, watch out for the firebox hole for the motor, it's rather small and a Maxon won't fit in there. The hole also limits your motor orientation quite a bit.

Despite how much time it'd save to my build I can't use it so it's going up for sale shortly.

I’m guessing the burr will see action here pal and I’ll end up looking like a smurf……again :))

A little bit of an update…..

The Hall stalled briefly as one of the wheels supplied had an adhesive failure on one axle which needed rectifying. They went to Mr Hursey and all were reworked with new axles and adhesive. An update next week on 5999 all being well as work has recommenced now I have the wheels back.

@warren haywood turned 4037 round in quick time but it’s taken me a couple of weeks to get the thing back together and pipe up the backhead etc. Superb job by Warren;
