5/32", 3/16" axle stock

Guys,

I have need for some 3/16" and 5/32" diameter axle stock. I've been looking for Ground Bright Mild Steel, but it seems difficult to get in sizes under 1/4".

So, are there sources of such material in relatively small quantities (I can get it to order from West Yorkshire Steels, but only in multi-metre quantities) or are there suitable alternatives?

I'm only looking at using this for plain axles, anything needing machining or split axles will use 4mm or 5mm Bright Mild Steel machined down to size...

That looks drawn to me.

Steph I can't find any either except in 3m lengths its usually the model engineering suppliers that have it.

I'm running low so let us know if you find any.

Hi Steph,

I have been looking for similar and so far come up with nothing but blanks. Silver steel is readily available but not so easy to machine. For recent axles I have resorted to using 5mm free cutting steel and turning it down to 3/16". A bit of a pain, and it adds time to the job, but with a freshly stoned tool and fine feed I can get a very good surface.

If you do find a source of pgms please let us know, if there is a minimum order we could always combine our purchaseing power.

Ian.

Steph,

Try looking for PGMS,(Precision Ground Mild Steel) which is what I have used. I got mine from Alan Harris when I bought his wheel castings. I am sure I read something about this on here not so long ago.

Not exactly what you want but might be helpful.

I purchased 3 1/16'' steel rod from HPC Gears, Chesterfield. 300mm lengths

or Ashford Model Engineering Supplies.

Whether it's what you're after I don't know.

Steph,

Do you think you might have to think Metric if you want ground material off the shelf? I found this web site which supplies centreless ground stainless steel but all in metric dimensions.

Centreless Ground | Precision Gears UK | Ondrives

I don't know how well the stainless steel might machine but I did salvage a load of stainless steel ground rodding out of a couple of old Epson printers and it does machine beautifully.

Another option might be to look around for a provider of centreless grinding services who might be able to provide the sizes you want. That will probably require a minimum order length but it might be worth a look.

Jim.

Try EKP supplies,I use them for my model engineering,They have an e bay shop as well,They do not do ground mild steel in the size that you want, only mild steel dia,But they do free cutting stainless steel in 1/8 and 3/16 and metric and this free cutting stainless does machine easily. Garry
