That's a very nice piece of work Mick.

One of these is on my list too but it may be several years down the line:))

Very tidy work Mick, have you been using that invisible solder again? Who needs kits eh?

I'm looking forward to seeing it progress.

Cheers

Great photos Mick. Mine will be the one at the bottom 68383. Although I wasn't brave enough to model the damaged bunker top and footplate near the buffer.

Just do what I did with my F5, accidentally pull the engine off of the shelf it was sitting on, bouncing off of all the tools on the workbench..

Thanks Tony,

I have to say I'm thoroughly enjoying this method of building. I have Col Dowling and Mick Nicholoson amongst others to thank for pushing me down this route and as they have both said its very rewarding, also much cheaper than buying a kit !! The main obvious draw back being its more time consuming, but I'm in no massive rush :)

Excellent sheet metal work mate:thumbs: nice and clean. I look forward to seeing chassis coming together.

ATB, Col.

Cheers Col, I'll hopefully see you in the next few weeks to make a start on the chassis

BLOODY HELL JB !!!! You're joking, I think if that we're my house you'd see a grown man cry!! Not too much damage I hope ?

A bit of damage to the tank top, but a strangely convincing crease and buckle on the bunker rails!!

Happy days  People spend a life time trying to model those details accuratley, you could do a YouTube video on what and and speed to throw your model on the floor to acheive such details :)):))

We once had a mostly-complete but unpainted 7mm scale Gibson 3F Jinty do a swan dive from the end of a layout. We were testing things before an exhibition, and had neglected to fit the end of the layout with the stops on...

Happily, the damage was limited to knocking the chimney off and denting the cab. You'd never know to look at it now.

I remember Tony Wright telling us a story of hurling a K's ROD chassis in frustration. We asked - 'did it work afterwards?'

Suprisingly - the answer was no!

The one thing I've found with my Class 40 bogie etch is that it takes solder very well, it also cleans up much better than brass and I think that the material being virtually the same colour as solder makes the joins look so much neater, he solder doesn't jump out like it does on a brass model. NS also does not tarnish like brass, I deliberately left areas unwashed and covered in flux whilst away and on my return theres no tarnishing present from the flux of finger prints.

I doubt I will ever use brass again for scratch building or my etch work, except maybe for small fiddly bits that need a maluable material like conduit clips or such like, but for major structure work, NS is a dream to work with.

Mick, nice clean work, wish I had your skills with a saw to cut straight enough to scratch build in NS LOL.

Thanks for the kind comments fellas. I have to agree with you Mick in as much as I will always try and work with NS in future. In addition to all the plus points you mention it just seems to take solder really well. If anything where I've used the brass angle for the footplate and coal rails etc it cause a bit of a headache, it seems the two materials have such different properties it makes them a reluctant partnership!

As a 7mm modeller you really should be wearing cardigans; leave tank tops to the 2mmFS mob. ;)

Hey, we all have a tank top tucked away somewhere don't we ? :) :)

Yes, the MOK 8F was all ns, and it was a joy to build in this material as well as being a good kit. Again ns although being a little harder to work solders very nicely.

Cheers

Not me, growing up in a poor household with a mother who had a knitting machine, I have had definite aversion to wearing anything knitted since I had choice.
