Great stuff John, I 'borrowed' the idea from Mike Osbourne and he was glad to pass it on, as am I. I'd love to see some photos of the build and hear how you get on with the removable irons. How are you getting on with the NE hoppers? On seeing your build earlier on in the year I thought, I must get some if those at some point. Only to find that all coal traffic to King George Dock was by end door mineral wagon, as the wagons were unloaded by mechanical tipper seen here

Fortunately I did find a picture of an A7 working hoppers full of Chalk for the cement works at Willmington, so I can still have some hoppers after all

Hi Mick have your cake and eat it if you look at Johns workbench you'll see what I mean. The hoppers are going on the workbench as well

So I've made a start on the smoke box, which I really haven't been looking forward too ! However seeing Heyside at Railex has made me get back to the bench. Crap pictures I know but I needed some hasty advice before I go further. As you can see wrapper is a riveted one and I've made this from 7thou brass. I still have to finish cutting it to size but you get the idea. I have this niggle that it will look too thick when fitted and not look right. Can anyone tell what material they've used for such a part please and point me in the right direction. Also I've just bluetacked the tube plate in for now to see what it will look like. Oh and don't worry about the sections missing as these will be part of the frames as the Joy valve gear protrudes above the footplate, thanks in advance chaps;

Oh and one last one of the smokebox sat about in the right place just to cheer me up to thinking it's starting to look like a loco

Hi Mick,

From memory, GWR smokebox wrappers are either 3/8" or 1/2" plate. Scale equivalents are 9 thou or 11 thou so 7 thou is going to be slightly thin.... ok this is not a GWR engine so look at the matter another way, 7 thou is a tad shy of 5/16" (full size) and that seems to be too thin to me.

I guess that the answer is really bound up with the thickness of the plain wrapper and how much of that thickness is visible.

Love the tubeplate, if the tiny holes are for wash-out plugs then I suggest that there is one missing from the LHS.

regards, Graham

The NERly drw does not show the wrapper thickness, but does state the smokebox front plate is 3/8ins thick.
Loverly work, keep it up. Best Wishes, Mick.

Thanks fellas, that offers reassurance and if anything as Graham says it may be a bit thin. The main wrapper is 15thou but when taking dimensions and drawing up I took the 15thou wrapper into account of the overall width of the smoke box. The additional riveted wrapper came later and certainly isn't on the original drawings. Fingers crossed it will be ok? I'll get cracking and see what it comes out like,

Nice work Mick, I wouldn't worry about the wrapper being 3 thou. under size in thickness once it's soldered to the smokebox and painted it'll look right .
Looking forward to seeing the finished product mate.

Thanks everyone,

I've got the wrapper fitted tonight and the smoke box is now well on the way. I'm reasonably happy with it and like Col says I think once completed it'll all look ok. I forgot to mention Graham, the holes are for wash out plugs and the hole on the LHS is there, it just needs openning out and I then need to fit some squares bar to represent the plug itself. The tube plate is one of JB's by the way and very nice too

I plan to visit my mates on monday and turn up the boiler tube so hopefully an update next week showing a almost finished body, well main assemblies less detail,

Thanks for reminding me that you are comming on Monday. I now have two days to tidy the workshop and make the lathe "User Friendly". Mick.

The tiny holes near the tubes are for washout plugs. I used scale hardware bolt heads for the plugs.. Can't see the damn things anyway :)

The hole next to the main steam pipe flange IIRC is the flange for the blower..

And a lovely tube plate it is too JB:thumbs:

As you've probably gathered I managed to get to Mick's and along with a fry up from his good lady I managed to get the boiler tube cut to length so I got craking last night as SWMBO was out with her lady friends. First to follow JB's lead and I used scale hardware bolts to represent the wash out plugs. I took a picture before fitting because as JB says you can hardly see the damn things once the smoke box is on:headbang::))

I then made the cut out for the motor and got the boiler fitted to the smoke box. This was a nervous time as the brass tube needs loads of heat to get the solder to run. Next time I may just use 15thou sheet and roll my own. I then made the wrapper at the rear of the smoke box from some 1mm square bare with a radius filed on, annelaed this and fitted it. So here are some photos of the J73 looking more like a loco. The Chimney and dome are LG and have been fitted, here and there more solder is needed to tidy joints up and the boiler is just blue tacked in place for effect at the moment. I don't really want to do anymore until I have the frames fitted, just in case I need to alter things. Oh you can probably see where the smoke box wrapper is too short:headbang:don't worry the frame extensions and front splashers will hide this.
