Hi everyone

I’ve nearly finished building an MOK 8F to S7 and my chosen prototype is 48706 as it appeared on S & D in the 1960’s. I recently discovered that its tender was a ‘part welded Mk1’. What I haven’t been able to find out is the number of the tender. I’ve just about to order a set of plates from Severn Mill, so I’m hoping that some of the experts on this forum might have an idea?

Any help would be gratefully received.

Regards

According to the Wild Swan loco profile 8706 was originally coupled to tender 10731 - not sure if that was still the case on the S&D.

Hi Adrian

Thanks, but I think that was the original Mk2 tender. I may well end up using that number though if I can't find the proper one. I dare say most people wouldn't notice that its wrong! It would just be nice if it could be the right one.

WT is a very attentive audience... .

WT has a few who might just remember when you are least expecting someone to notice... ;) .

If thats the only fault they can find, then I think I'll be happy. Actually, I'll probably number it 10676 which I think was a Mk1 part welded and it also had an external sieve, so although it may be wrong, it won't be quite as wrong.....;)

I've been reliably informed that the tender number was 10428. Unless someone knows better..............?

Steve,

48706 was paired with a part welded tender from Dec 1963 to withdrawal. However, be aware that the rear water breather pipes were rectangular and attached to the rear coal space bulkhead.

Hi Ian

Thanks for the info. Any idea what the tender number actually was? I'm going to get a special etch done so I can convert one of the MOK tenders. Yes, I know about the rectangular breathers. In fact I've already done the design, I just need a bit of time to prepare it ready for the etchers. I'll be using PPD. Normally get great service from them.

Steve,

I had planned to get up to the NRM at York to peruse the 8F Engine History cards, but haven't had the time so far ! That in theory should unearth the tender pairings.

Hi Ian

I appreciate the thought anyway. I'm told that the cards often didn't get updated at this time, perhaps they didn't see the point. I probably shouldn't admit to this but I've guessed at the number! Its a correct number for the type and style of the tender though and the manufacturing date is correct for the number, so it'll only be slightly wrong. ;)
