A Nice Little S7 Layout

I popped along to the S7 bash at Brightwell yesterday.

I was rather taken with Julian Russell's new layout "Wyebridge" and include a few pictures. It left me very inspired and wanting to go home and build my own layout straight away!


















The locos were all sound fitted, which certainly adds to the illusion of reality in my book.

Very nice indeed! I'd have thought it was 7mm if you hadn't said - superb detailing all round. It looks to be inspired by the Wye Valley lines... maybe the name is a giveaway too, but I note in particular the 'austerity track' - concrete 'pots' instead of sleepers, tied with rods occasionally - not sure I've seen that modelled before!

Hi Jordan - I wondered if anyone would notice the concrete pots (I think I've seen it done by someone in 4mm). I was going to mention it in a caption, but it was getting a bit late, so I decided against it. Just as well really, as the baby got me up 20 mins ago!

I think this one featured in an issue of the GOG Gazette - it looks like it may have been modified. I think it initially had a footprint of (I want to say) 9 feet by 1 foot and had a street scene and small bridge in it. Wonderful modelling.

I've always liked Julian's layouts, and although I had already been considering it for some time, his 1907 Midland layout 'Dale', which appeared in the Toddler in March 1994, was one of a clutch I saw over the following few months that prompted me to drop 4mm for good.

I believe the signal box and station building are laser cut jobbies - much better than using the embossed Slater's stuff. I'm not sure about the brickwork on the bridge and forgot to ask. I hope this layout makes a few more exhibition appearances, as I'd really like to see it again.

I was surprised not to see you and JB there, but hope you get your car sorted.

Dan,
Clutch release bearing is moaning,( gear box out job) and although it's drivable I didn't fancy going too far from home.
Apparently the videoturned out b/w due to a "ton" of digital noise, I don't understand these things but other's of you may.
The layout deserves to be featured somewhere, perhaps MRJ ? when it's finished, as it's obviously still work in progress in small area's.

Why? I thought it was a smashing video - with the sound off the black & white really added to the atmosphere. I particularly liked how smoothly & slowly the locos move on Wyebridge...

Hi Jordan - I think that having seen the layout in the flesh and then spent ages looking at the photos on the PC afterwards, I'd got used to seeing things in all their technicolour glory, especially the green locos and crimson auto trailer. After that, black & white seems less pleasing to me somehow, though if you're looking at black locos, it's not such an issue.

It is a good video though, which conveys a better feel for the layout than my handful of stills, though I wish I'd thought about turning the sound off - that music was driving me nuts! Perhaps I'll have another look later.
