A Question of the Wise

Gents,
can any of you identify this valve on the left side of the 9F. Having a name will help me find the little beggar.

errrr...... John the valve :).

I looks like a form of clack/check valve.

Where do the pipes to and from it go to and what are they supplying, water or steam? - this may give a clue. Is the pipe from the top of the valve going to the turret on top of the firebox?

Grumps,
Ah, it's the one that got away! Thank you for the extra photo, I'll spend some time with some tube and 12BA nuts. I had a forlorn hope that it was part of the steam heat fittings which 002 never had.
If you hear noises from the Wilds of Wales it is only another burnt finger tip!

I know its a model, but I must have put it on 92204 for good reason. I don't know what it does, but all 9Fs seems to have this pipe coming off the manifold Simon. I made it up from some tube and nuts.:-

Simon,
It looks like you have built the BR1G tender. You may have added the hatch to the tender water tank since taking the photo, but if not don't forget to add it before painting ;)

That's interesting. One of my photos of 92002 appears to show the BR1G without a hatch (April'62). In a photo taken at Swindon in Feb '54 you can just see the hatch behind the screen. Unfortunately the RCTS tome is silent on the tender allocations to see if there was a change.

My best guess is that the two pipes are the steam supplies to operate the cylinder drain cocks and the sanders. Of the steam operated auxiliary fittings they are the two most likely on the drivers side, if carriage warming apparatus had been fitted to the 9Fs it would be on the other side of the loco. What you have called a valve isn't really, just a union fitting.

Martin
