has anybody ( mick I know you won't let me down:D) got a colour picture of the crest carried by Merlin. Also a photo of it in post war garter blue with skirts removed as no27. Need to know what colour the nameplate is.

Nameplate colour is black, locos with red backgrounds as built were 60002, 60007-60017, 030. However when you get to late BR days it's all but clear some black plates went red then back to black on a whim it seems, some were light blue.

All the colour photos I have of Merlin show a black bias, but she was always allocated north of the border and light blue plates seem to come from that region more than any other I found. Example 60011 was originally red plates but by 1960 was black, then in March 63 was light blue but by May 63 was black again! For Merlin I'd go with black:thumbs:

Plaque, well I've no direct colour photos but Google turns up these two.

The plaque which Merlin is based on is H.M.S Merlin, a landbase for the RN which shows light green?

However Richard green thinks it might be light blue?

Having said that, Plymouth Military gifts, who seem to be pretty authentic

Have it as green

I would think that being as it's a recognised military crest then LNER would follow the correct heraldry colours, but, who knows!

The real loco crests must exist somewhere, but even then there is no proof that the extant colour is original, as can be seen from nameplate colours noted above.

A little more Flickr finds these shots where it does look blue?

What I find odd, is that Merlin is Haymarkets top hitter on the Elizabethian and there's more photos of that train and service being the top express on the ER at the time, yet 60027 seems very camera shy, certainly in colour.

I am gabberflasted... Peter and I have been searching for photos of Merlin for yonks and the one in the quote is new to us. More to the point, the nameplate is red rather than black.

Anyone care to date this photo of 27? And identify the livery of those coaches at the rear of the train?

Or is this a photo of Bitterne in disguise?

Cheers Mick,
Ok my next question.
I am painting it in post war garter blue with stainless steel numbers. Would the crest have been on the cab side or half way along the boiler.

Graham, it is 60009 in disguise and the date is early 90's. The coaching stock is in BR Intercity colours or what I call (Mickism) Swallow Intercity after the Swallow emblems applied to locos in the matching colours, I've no other photos that show the nameplate in red in BR days.

Warren, the plaques were fitted to the cab side at Haymarket 0n 26th May 1946, at that time the number 27 was painted.

In January 1947 the loco was painted Garter blue with stainless steel numbers and the plaque remained on the cab side.

The plaques were moved to the boiler side during a light 17 day shopping at Doncaster from late May to early June 1948 after which the loco was numbered 60027 and repainted in the trial BR purple livery.

So to surmise, with steel numbers the plaques are cab side from 01/47 to 06/48, thereafter they were on the boiler side. One further fly in the ointment, from 11th/March/48 the number changed to E27 and a small E was painted above the stainless steel numbers on the cab side, I think there may have been an E number on the front somewhere but I've not found a good clear photo yet as to where it would of been or it's sizing.
