An ideal first build

A member of our tiny FB group recently posted an image of a scratchbuilt exLSWR G6, built from plasticard with cast boiler fittings on proprietary RTR chassis. It seems an ideal first build as there is no acceptable G6 currently available and our group is trying to encourage ‘build not buy’.

However, a drawing is the first stumbling block, we haven’t got a copy of Bradley but we still live in hope that there is a drawing from Ian Beattie in the toddler or someone published a drawing in one of the lost publications.
There will be necessary compromises in order to fit whatever RTR is available and suitable, certainly not the HD. However that really isn’t the point of the project.

A posting in the group's blog has more information CLICK HERE

Thanks

Hi, things have moved on, the link to the blog has been comprehensively updated with some drawings and an album of images, thanks to some very helpful folk (this is a group project, after all)

Keeping in the spirit of the original build that utilised the Triang-era Jinty/E2 chassis, a chance discovery of Mikkel’s Farthing blog (other place) and his Pannier build was a bit of light-bulb moment. If compromise is an inevitable consequence* of using an RTR mechanism then use something better than an X04, hence the latest iteration of a Bachmann Pannier. This is Mikkel’s image:-

The smokebox would be on the left and no doubt bodgery would be afoot, if it can be used.

The compromises are not too painful, the wheels are 1,5mm undersize but OO flanges are huge and the wheelbase is 2mm too short but the Bachmann mechanism is no more compromised than Wills’ use of the HD chassis and the Bachmann is light years ahead in running quality.

*WT may not be the ideal place for a project using compromised components at the outset.
