And you think your tracklaying is bad...

Definitely not of the best... the alignment makes one wonder if there are any sleepers (or ties) under the detritus.

This is the main line across the Fens from Ely to Peterborough, taken from the Hundred foot drain crossing looking back toward Ely.

The Turbostar in the distance is about 2½ miles away.

And closer with 66 719 on the 4E33 service, the heat haze is an indication to the speed she is travelling at which is rated speed and for a class 4 train that's 75mph.

Apparently trains ran (once a day!) at "restricted speed"!

Not necessarily a challenge to track laying skills; more of a challenge to “fidelity to prototype”.
Best regards, Peter

In this regard, 2-axle trucks are much more tolerant of bad track than 3-axle trucks.;)
No need to guess how I know....:p

JLTRT then :), that's why the US has such high horsepower two axle diesels (3000hp+), plus they ride better at high speeds so Bo-Bo migrate to fast intermodals and class 2 and 3 back waters.

If you want to see really good bad track-laying, then search out "Model Railroad Planning" for 2007, specifically Mike Confalone's "Woodsville Terminal".

From the Railway Gazette:
Pioneer Railcorp buys Maumee & Western Railroad

10 January 2013

USA: The Michigan Southern Railroad Co subsidiary of shortline group Pioneer Railcorp completed the purchase of Maumee & Western Railroad Corp from RMW Ventures in late December. The 80 km line linking Woodburn, Indiana, and Liberty Center, Ohio, will be operated under the name Napoleon, Defiance & Western Railway.
'We have purchased this line with the knowledge that it is in dire need of rehabilitation due to years of deferred maintenance', said Mike Carr, President & CEO of Pioneer Railcorp. 'Our objective is to rehabilitate the line in order to provide consistent freight rail service to all current and potential shippers utilising the line. We also plan to restore two sections of track, from Napoleon to Liberty Center and west of Defiance to Cecil, that would offer all shippers on the line connections to multiple Class I carriers for more competitive access to the North American rail system.'
Pioneer Railcorp owns 25 shortline railways in 14 states totalling almost 1 000 km.
