Very informative but no-one answered the question about the 2 mins in the platform or the live rail in the 4ft

Westerns on the Eastern

From the pages of Modern Railways, March '75.

'Some readers have remarked that class 52s on the Eastern Region at Barking are not as rare as a previous correspondent implied. Numbers noted on dates between October and early January include 1001, 1003 1016, 1053, 1035, 1041, 1046, 1055, 1056, 1058 and 1072. Their usual working is on the 11:20 from acton to Temple Mills, then running light to Ripple lane and possibly working a freight back from Ripple Lane to the Western.'

Well I didn't know it happened at all, let alone be a reasonably commonplace event.

One of my greatest sadnesses in missing Western Ranger on (1E54?) Swansea - Leeds then (1V97?) Leeds - Bristol in early 1977. This was prior to Western Fusilier working a farewell tour from Exeter to York in the February.

I believe Westerns occasionally got as far a Derby on service trains, but the only two occasions I know they got further north are as above.

Photo's of D1013 Western Ranger at Leeds City Stn appeared in 'Traction' a few months ago working the service train you mentioned..........unbelievable that a Wezzy made it to West Yorkshire on a service train     & I have also seen a pic on the net of a Wezzy at Derby.
D1010 Western Campaigner makes a video appearance hauling a stone train to Leagrave on the midland too  in TVP's 'St Pancras Surburban'

FWIW, Westerns also made it to Northampton with freight coming over the Bletchley flyover. Have a seen a lovely pic of one under wires with an AC loco and a 310 emu for company!

Typically, my brief foray into trainspotting came after this event...

My foray into trainspotting more or less ended with the  end of the hydraulics  :(

I can certainly remember a western on the Barking-Gospel Oak line as it sat at a signal next to my classroom window when I was teaching in Forest Gate E7. Unfortunately do not know which one it was.
