No sir, it’s a very simple and cynical plan to make your perfectly functional computer obsolete.

If you can “free” upgrade the software, so it needs more capable hardware, and when enough punters buy into it, then you offer upgraded hardware that can use more complicated software, and so the merry go round goes…

Totally agree with your thoughts Larry my apple IPhone keeps moving all my app’s around into different scenes ….after an update I can’t find anything . On the last update they even changed how my alarm clock is set up ….,so annoying :headbang:

Great photos, Geoff.

I hope you don't mind but I couldn't resist a crop and a tweak of one of them.

Thanks Rob, feel free to crop and tweak away :)

I'm trying to get my head around how a p***** off looking bear could start an interesting rant about technology :D. But then again he could be sick and tired of waiting for an order to arrive from C&L Finescale

Forget Microsoft updates, they don’t beat your layout “updates” Geoff, lovely stuff.

C&L order service !!! there’s another story !!! :headbang:

Craig

Thanks Craig,

I'm afraid updates are going to be few and far between until I get my modelling room back. I have however manged to weather 4600 in the conservatory using the same odour free acrylic paints as used on 7719. However this time I used weathered black as the base coat rather than dirty black.

P1190853.JPG

I had to move a few bits and pieces to squeeze into the room to take this photo, and them move everything back to take this one........

P1190844.JPG

I would have fitted a lamp on the bunker bracket but couldn't open the draw in which they are stored. :(

P1190845.JPG

I'll only be asked for the black and white version of the photo so here it is....................

P1190530.JPG

What next, well 5807 is booked in for surgery next week which will involve relocating the tool box so it is central to the wheel splasher, one of the lamp irons will also need moving and then she will also be weathered along with the 'Toad'.

Locos straight outta the box look so wrong on an expertly scenic'd layout.....Some new words their for the dictionary :). 6400 looks well. Tell me Geoff, does this loco run silently? I ask because the two that I had wined so loud it could be heard above the DCC sound and I wondered if it was a characteristic of the belt drive.

I have the same noise on my 74xx, one of the original Lionheart batch.

Morning,

My model and those of my friends are exactly the same chaps, so I guess it is a characteristic of the belt drive. I get around the problem by turning my hearing aid off :D The model in the photo is a Dapol 8750 class Larry which looks better once the bright firebox has been painted, why they modelled it in such a weird colour defeats me.

Some new words their for the dictionary.

Yeh, I need to switch my eyesight on... Their instead of there.... Thanks for the info on the r-t-r 64XX

Gentlemen of a certain age like us are allowed the occasional mistake Larry, didn't stop my eldest from presenting me with one of these though, the cheeky s*d. :D

5807 had successful surgery this morning to relocate the toolboxes so that they are central to the wheel splashers, one lamp iron also had to be moved so that it was in front of the toolbox on this side of the model. Wheel rims and coupling rods have been blackened with a permanent marker pen, so I've just got to apply some varnish over the 3D transfers and she can be weathered.

P1190857.JPG

The toolboxes and one of the lamp irons were gentle drifted out of their locating holes, blind holes are provided for the different toolbox and lamp iron position. So it was a simple job to open those out and refit the parts to match a photo of 5807.

I share your pain with those dreaded Windows updates Larry, I've had to update my printers driver followed by my anti-virus. My default browser had been changed to Edge and Windows Photos has started playing up. I'm a firm believer of 'if it ain't broke then don't fix it', and whilst I can appreciate the need for security patches I've yet to see any of the so called improvements. I'm seriously pondering the purchase of a Chromebook because I've had my fill of Microsoft.

I'm in full agreement with Simon when he mentions the obnoxious arrogance of our friends in Seattle, and when their updates go wrong it is never their fault. As for the use of 'US English' I can feel a rant coming on.................

Geoff

It's interesting how often 'improved' websites are usually anything but. Our couriers (DPD Local) have just 'improved' their interface for setting up consignments. The information fields are identical, the main difference seems to be that, whereas the old version worked on anything with a browser, the new version is designed to only work under Chrome – and doesn't even do that on the staff iPad. At the moment it only functions on my Mac laptop.

I haven't used a Windows machine since before the Millennium so can't comment. MacOS updates are voluntary/hard to access accidentally and don't usually break things unless they're more than about 8 years old...

Hello Richard.

Oh, how I empathise! However, when I was working I simply threatened to change suppliers. It worked with our mobile phones and car hire companies, just as examples. Occasionally, of course, you actually have to carry out the threat. I guess it rather matters how much business you do with that particular supplier.

Good luck!

All the websites that I tend to use have one thing in common, and that is their ability to accept payment for goods efficiently! Everything else is a bit hit and miss.

Hi Brian

I have thought of changing couriers – and threatened their IT department with just that – though it seems that are calling my bluff. We do a few hundred pounds worth every month so not massive, besides which we have a good relationship with the local office and their drivers. But they must get their software sorted, or...

My experience of courier companies is that they are utterly convinced that whatever they do is right. Even if they’re usually helpful, if they're busy, they’ll get your collection tomorrow.

They charge vat when they shouldn’t, and then hold you to ransom if you don’t pay (even assuming you have acknowledged the invoice, and questioned it) according to their timescale.

Things are better now, but in the immediate post-Brexit shambles, they had insufficient staff, with insufficient training, to cope with the inevitably increased workload, and that was something of a stress-raiser.

really not my favourite suppliers…

I'm sure I recognise the 16T Toad in the pictures.

It's the one that decided to do a regular commute between our respective addresses:D.

It is indeed Richard but it was a mere collection of parts in those days, until you tempted me to try the delights of 7mm gauge modelling:)

I remember building the chassis and thought to myself, I could get used to this, the rest as they say is history. :)
