I bought some 13:1 gears from Roxey Mouldings, which fitted nicely. Tried it out on the club test track this evening, it ran very well, and at a much more realistic speed, so thanks for the suggestions. Now I need to actually build it. First job is the driver's handrails, a bit fiddly when you're used to gauge 3.
