Crane Locomotives

As the prototype appears to have slightly longer side-tanks than a terrier, I had to model these. Red primer thrown on to highlight the join between the original tank and extensions. Orange-peel paint finish should disappear once I've attacked it with wet 'n dry paper.

Just had time to run down the red oxide. Looks scruffy, but nice and smooth to the touch.

It's a Peco yard crane. By the time I've finished with it there probably won't be too much Peco left in it. More like eek-oh!

Starting to get the cab and front sandboxes sorted. I spent quite a while measuring out the rivets on the r/h cab sidesheet and still managed to get it slightly out. Spent no time at all on the l/h side cab sidesheet and got it right. Typical!

Painfully slow progress. I do try to do a bit every day, but it's sunny out so prefer to get out and enjoy the fresh air.

Hmm. Not sure. I get the impression these locos were pretty much left in a yard to carry out coaling of other locos. I'm assuming therefore that they must have had a wagon attached with a suitable supply of coal. Happy to be told otherwise though.

I'll guess..... the coal bunkers are alongside the cab sheets. I'll also guess that most of these locos were used within depots where there was plenty of coal about so maybe there was no need for on board coal supplies.

Frankly, and as is normal, I dunno!

Starting to get my enthusiasm for railway modelling back now. I've been adding a few bits to the crane loco and putting a bit of paint on:

Managed to get the cab roof done. Note the cut out in the roof to make room for the crane! Also, grey paint applied on side-tanks and splashers. I wasn't sure about grey at first, but I think it suits the utilitarian nature of this loco.

After many hours of bending and cutting bits of tubing I've assembled something that (to my eyes) resembles the steam/exhaust pipework associated with the crane. Actually it looks a bit like a giant hookah from some angles!

The cab inches its way to completion. Might be quicker if I just shut my eyes and throw some bits of tubing and hope they stick!

Very inventive and in my view probably the best use for the Terrier I've seen.

It being an Australian loco. I feel its only correct to quote the late great Ritchie Benaud "A Marvellous effort that".

All you need now is the bunker coal wagons to go with it. And before anyone says anything no I have no plans to make (or sell) any at the moment.
