Getting there:
Public Transport

If coming from Central Wakefield, on the Saturday take service 106 Wakefield - Hall Green from Wakefield Bus Station, leaving at 00, 15, 30 and 45 minutes past the hour. Alight at the High School. Return journeys depart at 04, 19, 34 and 49 past the hour. On Sunday it runs every 30 minutes leaving Wakefield at 20 and 50 past the hour, returning at 05 and 35 past the hour.

On the Saturday only, there is also an hourly service by the 107 Wakefield – Kettlethorpe from Wakefield Bus Station, Stand 17, which takes a different route. Departures are on the hour during the day. The buses stop within fifty yards of the school in Standbridge Road. Departures in the return direction are at thirty two minutes past the hour.

The nearest railway station is Sandal & Agbrigg (Northern Rail) followed by a short walk to Barnsley Road, then take the bus service 106 to Kettlethorpe High School. Failing that it’s about a 30 minute walk to the school.

It would be wise to check with both Arriva for the buses and Northern Rail for the trains, as weekends often means route maintenance work resulting in reduced or diverted services.

Travel by car
Satnav: WF2 7EL. The venue is with easy reach of the M1 (Junction 39). Follow the A636 towards Wakefield for about ¾ of a mile then turn right into Asdale Road, A6186. At the roundabout by the entrance to Asda’s carpark turn right into Standbridge Road.

From Wakefield follow the A636 signposted to the M1 and on reaching the A6186 turn left and follow the directions above.

The entrance to expoEM will be on your left. There should be adequate parking on the sports centre site, which is on the right hand side of, and opposite the school. Cross Standbridge Lane by means of the traffic light controlled crossing and enter the school through the pedestrian gate. If parking here is not available, there is plenty of on-road parking in the vicinity of the school, but we would ask that you respect driveways to private houses if parking there.

Disabled parking is available on the school site amd access should not pose problems as there are no stairs to negotiate. Assistance, if required, is available upon request at the entrance to expoEM.

We'll feature all the layouts appearing at expoEM Summer over the few days, including colour photos where they're available. The expo Guide will be in monochrome. The first layout to be featured is our Guest from Paul Greene of the S Scale Society.

Blakey Rigg – S Scale (1:64, 3/16”2o the foot)
Paul Greene
Blakey Rigg (or ridge) was between Rosedale and Farndale and was the site of Blakey Junction high up on the North Yorkshire Moors on the Rosedale Branch of the North Eastern Railway. The branch reached the tops via an incline and was built to transport the considerable quantities of ironstone mined there and move it down for smelting in Teesside into iron and steel. The busy junction saw branches going off to the East and West sides of Rosedale plus another branch into Farndale. On my layout in S Scale, it is assumed that the Farndale branch brought in both ironstone and potash. Together with the Rosedale Ironstone, the Junction was a busy but isolated and windswept place.
Please do not hesitate if you want to ask questions about the layout, prototype or S Scale.

Went to show today, and a jolly good time was had. Good selection of layouts, large and small. Well worth it.

Having visited today a very good exhibition, plenty of great layouts large to very small with a range of period to suit just about anyone, and an excellent variety of traders to get stocked up on your modelling needs. Thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend a visit, if you are close enough and have the time on Sunday well worth going.

It is not the only show to have disappointing support. People say they are important and I feel the interaction between modellers, modellers and traders and to see layouts and models for inspiration are all important for modellers to improve and learn new skills in addition to their well-being with the social contact.

It would be very useful to show organisers to know WHY the support for shows has fallen off. Surely it can't still be fear of Covid. Is it they have become more reclusive after being out of circulation for so long with the lockdowns and got out of the habit of going out? Whatever it is, it is time they let their reasons be known. What would get them out, about and involved? This hobby needs people to interact and not just on Forums.

Just got back. A very nice show but very badly attended. I arrived shortly after 13.00 and was given ticket 89!

I do not doubt your number, but have to point out that you are creating a very false and unhelpful impression here. Just before close of play today, the show had enjoyed almost double the number of vistors compared to last year and the organisers were very pleased with that as it well exceded their best hopes. I am selective about which shows I vists and this one was very worthwhile. I was able to car-share with 2 friends and that made the journey a pleasure also.

I think that it is a bit too easy to talk ourselves into a doom spiral, and whilst I agree with some sentiments here regarding the considerable headwinds, I think it also right to celebrate the successes. I hope everyone will - as I have - pencil mark their diaries for next year

'course, I can't deny it - I only went to avoid the £"(&!^$ football ...

I went today; having attended last year, it was definitely in my diary for this year, even though I don't model in 4mm. I seem to remember that this show has been at a variety of locations over the last few decades, and I think the venue at Kettlethorpe school is a very good one. The exhibition is spread across two halls, one being the traditional school main hall but the other is a new building with some of the best lighting and ventilation I have come across at a railway exhibition. Parking on site is quite tight, but immediately opposite the entrance is a large all-weather surfaced free car park. Access is very easy by road.

The layouts were uniformly good, and each year there is a visiting layout in another scale; this year it was Blakey Rigg in S scale, and in the recent past the visitors have been in 2mm and S7.

Trade support was provided largely by national traders who I suspect would not have attended again this year if they didn't think that the footfall would make it worth their while.

I think that the EM Gauge Society provides some of the best specialist shows available. The atmosphere is always one of friendly enthusiasm with no tendency towards obsessiveness which can occasionally be found at other gatherings!

As a trader at the show it was one of the best show I have been to. The issue with the tickets was there was two sets of tickets members and non-members. I was told that by COP on Saturday there had been more people though the door than there had been for the two days last year. And by the time we had packed up last night there had been the same again though the door. From what was said there had been less members and more non-members so by the lunch time they were using the back of the members ticks for non-members.
For what it's worth my favourite layout was the S scale NER Rosedale one. So much so I'm tempted to dip my toes in after I have finished the next two micros.
