Ey up!

Hello everybody ... latest recruit reporting in!

Now, what to say ... wide and varied interests in UK railways due to having moved round the country quite a bit but have a thing for pre-grouping and the Furness in particular.

Currently part of a group working on a 2mm layout based on Lightcliffe on the L&Y line between Bradford and Halifax ... and just about to embark on my own layout based on Coniston circa 1914 - building buildings at the moment but hoping to start on a 3D mock up (or more likely cock up) shortly!

Regards,

David V.

Welcome to the best place to be on the 'net.

Pre-group? nice. Furness? tasty.

Plenty of scope to entertain us all with photos of models of pre-group Furness, L&Y, maybe even L&NWR.

regards, Graham

Welcome aboard - I have been following the Pennine Area Group posts with interest, as it's probably the closest AG to me.

Coniston is a brave choice, iconic Furness railway and a stunning backdrop, I should think it's ideally suited for 2mmFS. Having walked around there many a time I would love to see this develop.

Greetings David. 2mm seems to be taking off right now on WT, so you got here just in time.

Will be interested in watching your progress in both the group and individually.

Thank you one and all for the warm welcome - I'll get some photos of current projects sorted and posted as soon as I can.

If ever you fancy popping along, we usually meet on the second Saturday of the month.

As for Coniston, it's a layout I've been building in my head for years. I used to live not that far away and as a terminus it's got almost everything - overall roof ... integral goods shed ... slate wharf ... cattle dock ... a lovely wrought iron footbridge ... engine shed ... turntable ... a wonderful looking signal box ... and an overbridge to act as a scenic block ... plus it's not technically a terminus in that you've got a line sneaking off to the Coppermines. Add to that the location ... on a shelf in the middle of the hillside with slate cottages above and below ... and throw in Indian red engines hauling blue and white coaches. What more could a modeller need.

Barry Norman did a plan for it in 2mm in MRJ 73 and was apparently planning to build it in 4mm at one time, but for me it's only really in 2mm that you'll be able to get the depth of the scene in a reasonable space ... and the height's important too - got to get the drop of the landscape from back to front to really do the location justice.

I know in my head how I want it to look and I've already produced the trackplan in Templot but the next step has to be a 3D model - make sure everything fits.

I feel a thread coming on!

Regards,

David V.

I will try as it's only about an hour away for me - unfortunately second Saturday in June I'll be on camp with a dozen Beaver Scouts!!

Quite - I have done numerous walks around Coniston and I can understand the attraction, fairly unique station building carved into the hillside. I also have a keen interest in Donald Campbells record attempts on the lake so I do like the area.

I had a look back at that layout plan. Quite a challenge even in 2mmFS, it would be great to see his plan turned into reality, what was it 9ft wide but 5ft deep? In 2mm that would be something to see, I note with interest that he mentions that Coniston was a potential follow up to Petherick and he seems to rue the decision that it wasn't.

Unfortunately, I haven't got the room for 9ft by 5ft! Current thinking is 8ft by 2ft with a dog leg fiddle yard and possibly an inglenook at the other end to represent Coppermines Wharf (which in real life was just two dead end sidings that ended up being used for stabling excursion stock).
