Flying Pig, 43106

Prompted by "James Spooner's" saga about building an Ivatt Class 4, 2-6-0 from a Nu-cast kit (Elmham Market in the Layouts section), I've found this poor quality image (it's photograph of a photo print!) of 43106, which I built many years ago for the late Ray Hammond, to run on his Thursford, S4, layout.
The loco was built with the aid, and I use the word very loosely, of two Jidenco etched kits. The basic chassis, with frames, wheels and coupling rods, had been assembled by that superb modeller, the late John Hayes, who had given up the job due to the quality of the kit. Needless to say, the chassis ran beautifully. I rashly agreed to take on the completion and the photo shows the final result. The firebox/boiler/smokebox unit was scratch built as the kit parts were useless. I did fit the half-etched rivetted smokebox wrapper, however. Most of the valve gear was Comet (for the BR Std. version).
The tender was 2 mm too narrow, but it was agreed to live with that and it's not obvious in the photo. I think a Bachmann body would for a much better basis for a model nowadays.

I don't know who took the photo, but it was probably at an exhibition or Ray's house.
Dave.

Yes, thanks Brian.
When i built the model, I had no information about the tablet catchers so left them off. I did include the recess in the tender sides.

Nice to see 43106 being mentioned. I was on a railtour in February 1967 behind the engine. It achieved 82mph running from Beattock to Carlisle. There are 'accounts ' of this being a tender first run, not so, the engine was turned at Beattock .

Here are some of my own of 43106 at Eastleigh on 23rd May 1965. Perhaps Neil @Podartist79 would like to use this as inspiration when he next has one to weather. :D Somewhat amazingly after these photos the loco was overhauled at Eastleigh and saw further service at Carlisle Kingmoor and Lostock Hall before withdrawal in 1968.

I certainly would love to use those as photo reference for a weathering job Brian!
Not sure anyone would request such a job though?!

Many moons ago I also built a model of 43106 from the Millholme kit - as it had been a Woodford engine for a while. There was a lot of chunky white metal! It was to run on various 4mm layouts including Charwelton. It was a knife and fork job! It doesn't look quite as refined as yours Dave!

The external condition of steam locos was transitionary. I saw some Caprotti Black Fives at Llandudno Junction which looked for all the world like scrap but, come the summer timetable, they were out and about on Manchester and Crewe turns and were only cleaned later ~ as often as not by local enthusiasts.
