Hassell Rode (Alsager Railway Association Club Layout) Open Day 10th July

Hi All,

I have just been introduced to this forum though another member George T who has recently joined Alsager Railway Association. The layout has evolved quite a lot over it's time. Originally the main focus of the layout was the bridge which spent many years on the exhibition circuit. We had a lot of fun exhibiting the layout and various shows over the country. The fiddle yard was covered by a colliery which has been converted into a stand alone layout. We have also exhibited this and have two shows planned for this year.

It was decided that the layout would become a permanent feature at the club and be retired off the exhibition circuit. As a result of this the fiddle yard was scrapped and replaced with a station which is what you see. This is now the main focus of the layout and where our attention is. We have had the layout operating now for some time and scenic work continues, with signals currently being added.

We are fortunate enough to have someone who is handy on cad and has access to a 3d printer and laser cutter, and has speeded up the process of adding buildings to the layout. Currently going though his workshop is a goods shed. There is still a lot to add though and ideals are always being put forward. We are looking at developing an engine shed at one end of the layout and we also have a pair of scenic only boards which need populating with houses.

The next main item though which has taken a leap forward recently is to replace the bridge, although it is a feature everyone likes it makes the operation of the station impractical especially on an open day. The decision has been taken to replace what has become the back of the layout with a fiddle yard. This shall make the operation of the layout a lot easier and create some much needed storage.

We hold open days though the year and our next one is on 10th July.

Many Thanks for reading

It's great to see the layout again - I saw it several times on the circuit and it drew me back every time as a display worth spending time with. I'm personally sorry to learn that it won't be touring any more.

Hi Brian, unfortunately the layout was becoming harder to transport, we required a 7 1/2 ton truck to transport the layout, and with the loss of our local hire firm this only made transport increasingly more difficult. I am glad you enjoyed viewing the layout when you've seen us on the circuit. We had a lot of fun going out, it's a shame after so many years ARA don't have an o gauge layout to show. The best as can do now are our club open days.

A few photos.

Sorry they are attached as thumbnails but clicking on them should bring up the larger photo. It's the only way my phone would allow them to be added

Cheers

Even though it's quite local, I can't really do shows of any kind these days. My left knee objects and the right one isn't too happy about the idea either.

Hi Benjamin, Great to meet you and your Dad at the Portsmouth Show today. I hope you don't catch anything from coming this far SOUF.

Good Morning,

We had out running night on Friday, although not a great deal of stock was run there was enough to offer a little variety. I snapped a few photos and as you can see there is really a lot of work left to do on the layout. The fiddle yard boards are coming on well now and should be ready to slot into place soon. The village boards are still waiting for a little TLC. The idea behind them is great, but work on them appears to stall a lot. Something to be looked at after the engine shed and fiddle yard.

Attached are a few photos of the locos running on Friday.

We survived the South Andy and are al ready to return to Folkstone in October again. If you are ever up this way visiting George feel free to drop us a message and we can arrange a visit to the club.

I managed to make three joggled stock rails the wrong way up, one evening a few years back …

(or, I suppose, the right way up, with the joggle the wrong way )
