Hi,

Just a quick introduction. I'm kelly (you may recognise that name from another forum...), primarily model Southern (both steam, and modern) as well as LT and military narrow gauge as interests. Outside of railways, I'm keen on history (aviation/military etc) and reading (sci-fi/fantasy), etc. I also make jewellery as a hobby, so when I'm not considering or modelling trains I am usually doing something with wire/beads or clay (usually as gifts for friends).

Welcome Kelly. Nice to see practical skills in other hobbies as these things are often completely unknown to us modellers, yet we can learn from them.

Hi Kelly,

Welcome and thanks for joining. Hopefully you'll find that it's a fairly laid back group with a love of making things and learning new techniques. As Mike mentions bringing in practical skills from other spheres will always be of interest, a while ago I did some evening classes in Jewellery making and silversmithing which helped my modelling.

Thanks Mike. I'll certainly add photos where I can don't worry :) (there are lots on my flickr from shows too)

Thanks Mike. The jewellery making tends to be my 'first' hobby a lot of the time really as it takes less room than the modelling. It all helps distract the mind from the chronic pain I suffer I find too.

Welcome Kelly!

Lots of piccies is our currency, so looking forward to seeing what you get up to.

Don't worry I will post as many as I can :)

Hi Kelly and welcome to WT.

Thanks Dan :)

Hi Kelly,
Welcome! I hope you enjoy it here, there's bags of enthusiasm and experience.
Cheers,
John.

Thanks John.

Thanks Adrian. I did a small amount of silversmithing a number of years back, but don't have the facilities or space to pursue that at this time, so focus on bead, wire and crafting from polymer clay mainly. The jewellery is mainly to make cheaper gifts for friends and family really.

I've attached a small selection of some of the ones I've made in the past for friends and family.

I do have plans for a military narrow gauge layout, but when it might see reality is unknown atm, can only focus on one plan at a time and atm that is the two P4 layouts.

That's two plans surely..

JB.

Yes, it is, but one leads to the other in the sense that the first is a learning exercise before continuing work on the other bigger plan. Sorry if I came across confused in what I was saying, I've recently hurt my back and a bit zonked on morphine recently.

Don't worry, I was pulling your leg..... which probably won't help your back..!

JB.

Indeed. Its sometimes hard to see humour/sarcasm on a forum anyhow.

Anyway, back to the models. I have a desire at some stage to build a small layout based around Lillie Bridge (LT/LU), as well as a small NG and SG Chilmark/Dinton inspired layout. I gradually get bits over the years that are suited for both (mainly kits) at the same time as planning the two layouts I've posted here. In some ways the two layouts are easier to find stock for as an EPB or a HAL etc can be sought rather easier than certain NG/ST military items or LT/LU outside of the panniers (have a Mercian Peckett S class and a Judith Edge Sentinel kit for the LT/LU (replaced the Panniers)). So lots of things going on concurrently really :)

Welcome Kelly.

Nice to have another SR/LT modeller on board and look forward to seeing pictures.

At least with North Kent you're on the right side of the SR :) (my interest is LBSCR and SECR (ex LCD)).

I've always hankered modelling a small LT shunting layout based in the city in front of a walled platform so from the front all you will see will be the shunting yard, behind this the station wall, roof canopies and the station building with LT ephemera. Then have sound of the electric stock (arriving, stopping and starting) emanating from behind the walled platform to evoke the atmosphere.

I grew up in the Erith/Dartford area, so thats partly why I chose the Woolwich/Charlton area for the layout I'm working on at present. But researching SR/BR(S) 3rd rail items (and steam!) is fascinating in itself anyway.

Might be a bit of time before there are any photos of the LT modelling. But I have been working on a 465 conversion slowly, as well as an 4EPB using Replica parts. I have recently gotten some MJT HAP sides to go on Replica sides, but with hurting my back not sure when I will start on that. Been concentrating on a few vans more recently.

I've attached a few photos of the efforts with the EPB and Networker. They're rather rough still. The EPB warped rather badly I found after applying some filler, so it is in bits again awaiting another attempt. The Networker is stalled as I only have enough parts for the one centre car chassis, being unable to get more Hornby chassis as spares at a suitable price (not the current £15+ they seem to go for), so I need to look at scratchbuilding a new chassis using the one I've started as a guide.

The wagons are works in progress, and await some extra detail items and the Cambrian ones need my acquiring P4 wheels, and all need me to acquire suitable springing potentially (though I'm not sure on that, might leave the VanWide unsprung as a test for the trackwork).

My dad grew up around Sheerness and remembers the 1939 electrification to Gillingham with it's 2-Hals. I'm generally interested in early UK railway electrification but more so the LBSC elevated.

Crumbs, there's a lot of work on the 465. Is this to achieve the 4 car set?

The early LBSC system (overhead) is an interesting one, but not sure I'm up for the challenge of modelling that for a variety of reasons. But iirc it ran on the opposite side, and had its own unique signals too. Lots of fascinating history there.

As for the 465. Yes, rather involved. Basically it needs 2 body shells for each centre car to put the end on it, but two different shells are needed for each, so in effect it needs a set of body shells for the outer ends (as normal for the 466 Hornby modelled) and 2 shells per centre car, plus two chassis' per centre car (plus obviously 2 for the power cars). But if I'm to model the late 80s to early 90s, 465s are a crucial element of the end of the EPBs. I have plans to make the translator coaches too (the Invicta ones look too simplified and overpriced to me) so I can have EPBs going one way and a new 466 with translators being pulled towards Slade Green depot the other way.
