Good day guys, I was guided to this forum by a fellow member to look at a particular thread, my first time here and have to say there's some great work on here. Although I do dabble in 'O' gauge, my main focus for now is in larger scales so you probably won't hear much from me unless someone is looking for details on 4472 of which I have a fair amount of knowledge on. I note some members here who will know me on other forums, hi guys.
Anyway, just popping my head up above the parapet to say hello.

Heather I have seen your work on FB, very good I must say...it may interest you to know that I am also a professional modelmaker/engineer by trade.

John I am trying (some say very :) ), I think I can now say that I've finally reached the halfway mark, so should be finished by 2026, I suspect it may take a little longer but I'm working on it...honest...:)

Thank 'ee. I’ve left Facebook now, too much heat and little light.

The thing with Western Thunder is we like to see pictures. So, anything you might care to share should be copiously illustrated whenever possible - it doesn’t matter subject, scale, or even if it’s nothing to do with railways as such. Although chiefly a railway modelling forum, there’s a varied selection of interests to be found here.

Heather, yes I saw your post on FB stating you were ceasing. I think my project is a little large, I did look at the various scales with topics with the closest being gauge 3 with is about half my scale. I don't think it would fit in and to be honest, I'm already giving full details of it's build on 3 sites which takes up a lot of time.

I can show this picture which is from last summer, it's the same image as in my 'avatar' but of course much larger and clearer. Things have moved on a little since this picture but it gives a good idea of what I'm building.

Welcome aboard - it's nice to see what you're building, especially live steam. Given the specialist kit required are you going to be making your own boiler or get one built?

Hi guys

Thank's for the kind welcone...Adrian, to answer your question. This was something that I gave a lot of thought too, I had planned and wanted to build the boiler myself and had enquired at my ME club looking for someone (boiler inspector) to help and oversee the build as is the rules. I didn't get much notice and considering the size of this boiler (not a one person build) and my lack of experience and equipment I decided to get a profesdional to build it. Another benefit is it gives me more time to get on with the bits I really enjoy...the fine details...:)

It is a dilemma - whilst I think we would all like to make everything ourselves certainly at this size as you say it's not a 1 person job and does need a decent setup and kit to build it properly. I was lucky enough to spend a little work experience in a workshop building 10 1/4" locos but even then with all that kit this wouldn't have been an easy job. Fully understand out sourcing the job, a prudent decision. At least with the smaller scale live steamers it is a 1 person job!

Yes, it's also a very costly affair if something goes wrong, I have a top guy doing it for me, IMHO the best out there, I can also talk to him about extra requirements, as for me scale is important, somethings can't be fully scaled but you can get very close in 5" gauge, the backhead will be very much scale looking and everything will be fully functional, well except the heating, I'll draw a line there...:)

I have the same kit sitting untouched in the loft along with corridor tender, one day I may actually find the time to build it. I have everything ready, premier rods and motion, slater wheels, motor and gearbox and a number of Laurie Griffin castings including his excellent backhead set. The only difference is that I'll be building her as an A1, same as the bigger model will be….:)

Hi Pete,
Built the corridoor tender for the A4 albeit in the later modified condition.
Lovely kits to build. On the loco, I replaced the etched sanding crank on the running plate with a casting and added the injectors, all from Ragstone.

Here's a comparison of the two.

At the rear I made the hoses from brass and fitted to the tap castings, as I don't like rubber tubes or coil springs for these details. The screw coupling has been added to the storage hook on the corridoor tender, since this photo.

I used the blackheads in the kits. They are pretty good but I'm sure there are one or two items that could added.
