Here are some photos of a Shay type locomotive built by a member of the club. This is a 45 mm gauge machine, driven by a hot air engine. British engineering and ingenuity lives on . . .
The fuel is carried in the cylindrical copper tank.
The burner assembly.
Gearbox and final drive. The rectangular block between the UJs is a telescopic link to let the bogies follow curves.
The electric motor runs as a dynamo to drive the front and rear marker lights, these are flashing LEDs.
The radio control gear is inside the dummy coal bunker.
I didn’t have time to make a video but the locomotive is most graceful in motion, quite wonderful really.
