Just saying Hi

Nice and informative site and enjoying reading up on the various threads. My main interests are late 50's early 60's Steam/Diesel in P4 but drifting towards 7 mm, having a couple of loco kits ready for building in the near future. Still not sure whether to go for fine scale O or Scale 7 so reading up as much as possible before I commit.
Must admit I do like the appearance of Scale 7 and having only a proposed 13' end to end layout wouldn't be too ambitious, so if anyone has ever built a MOK Q1 or a David Andrews Schools class V in Scale 7 I would be very interested to hear.
Anyway enough rambling. Thanks for having me and hope I can pick a few brains along the way.
Cheers!

There are a number of WTers who have built Q1s in Finescale. I'm sure they will step forward with their comments soon.

An issue in S7 might be just how much thinning can be done to the wheels in view of their interesting construction. Colin has just reprofiled some Slater's GWR 850 class wheels for me. As they have 'H' section spokes they could not be thinned at the back as usual without losing the correct appearance.

Thanks for the info Dave regarding wheels (and the welcome Col) Its still early days yet as mentioned, so still yet to decide. But the more I look at the Q1 the more I think it should be built as intended as its such a nice piece of design.

Bob,
Building a MOK Q1 in S7 would be tricky. There are two reasons for this, firstly the general construction with various folded and tabbed spacers would be an exercise in patience to reproduce. Secondly, Dave has done some very clever selective compression across the width of the frames around the cylinders, so you'd end up having to remake a lot of parts around the smokebox.
Anyway, it's lovely to have another 7mm SR modeler on the patch, welcome to the forum.

Welcome Bob...

I'm all for S7 as you can probably tell from my forum name, but it isn't for everyone.. Nothing to do with skill level or the time, especially if you are coming from P4 which in my opinion is a whole lot trickier, it's just down to the social side of things..

If you're a social modeller I'd look around at local clubs to see what they're doing. I'm sure that not being able to run your engines on a local club layout would be a little frustrating.

However, as the years go by more and more S7 layouts are being built and S7 area groups are getting busier and more active, so you may find an S7 group near to you which might help to swing you in the right direction..

Thanks for the welcomes and advice, much appreciated. Unfortunately there isn't any clubs near me so in the past (with P4) have relied on the society excellent web site for advice and info when needed. Fortunately, I'm not too far from Somerset so will definitely visit next years S7 exhibition. I've also recently applied for membership of the S7 Group to see hopefully what's involved.

Hi Bob,

welcome on board. I have built two MOK (greatest O Gauge kits on the market) Q1's and a David Andrews Schools and must say that they were all a treat to build. I have a 'photo build history' of the Q1s if you are interested circa 300 pictures between the two builds, please send me a PM if you would like a copy.

Welcome Bob

Tell us more bout the diesels

Steve

Hi Steve, Not a lot to talk about really? My own favourites are the type 2's and 3's especially the first batch split head code 37's. I've done, so far, a few Ultascale Bachmann conversations in P4 along with an 08 and a 33 Crompton. Also got a couple of Lima 31's currently on the work bench fitted with new motors but not happy with the running. Also just finished a 9f in P4 which is another story. Would really like to do a Split head code 37 in 7mm which will do one day when funds allow.
As an aside as previously mentioned, my S7 info pack dropped through the letter box Christmas Eve so currently enjoying a bit of reading while the grandkids destroy the front room. Also found a very nice new Vernier Calliper I needed amongst the Linx smelly stuff and novelty socks on Christmas day so well happy!
