7mm Martin Finney A3 - Spearmint

Hello everyone

So after a very long break of 14 years from the hobby, my interest in modelling has returned.

I sold of most of my collection years ago but kept my best work which was a Martin Finney A3 which will be 60100 "Spearmint". So after all this time I thought I should actually get around to finishing it, I dont know if 15 years is some kind of record, probably not, but now it is definately time to return to the build and get it over the line.

The loco is very near completion, I need to fit all the cab detail and backhead and there is a little pipework around the smoke box to do, but really just bits and pieces.
The model has been bubble wrapped and stored for all these years and yesterday was the day I unpacked it. Fortunatly it has not suffered any damage and all the instructions and remaining pieces are present, the brass has sadly tarnished over the years, which is only to be expected, the nickel chassis however, has not tarnished at all and still shines like the day I built it.

My plan now is to dismantle the model where I can, I recall I made the boiler detatchable from the footplate, thoroughly clean and examine and make a work order of what needs doing.

Here are some photos I took yesterday straight after unpacking.

Has anyone got any suggestions on what to use for cleaning away the tarnish?DSC00554.JPGDSC00560.JPGDSC00563.JPGDSC00564.JPGDSC00565.JPGDSC00576.JPG

Good to hear from you - look forward to your work - feel free to use the "full" option on the photos to insert at full size. It just makes life easier for members. [ I've edited the first post to demonstrate ]

In Western Thunder terms I suspect this will barely scrape into the top 10 - he says looking at an unfinished Ivatt 2MT started 38 years ago!

Horolene is often recommended but has a long list of safety warnings on the tin and it stinks to high heaven.

I remember the big A0 drawing duplicator at Girling in the 80’s. Ammonia…. Mind you, it cured a snotty nose.
Used to be one of those in the basement of the Staffordshire County Council Highways Department offices in Tipping Street, Stafford. The print room stank of ammonia, as did the A0 drawing prints off the negatives.

I spent hours trimming them many moons ago and handling the paper always used to affect the fingers. Then COSHH came in....
