Recently Steve at Narrow Planet introduced this delightful mixed media kit of a loco introduced in the 1980's for use in RNAD munitions depots.

Here's the link to the Narrow Planet website giving more information on the kit. I have no links to Narrow Planet except as a satisfied customer:

http://www.narrowplanet.co.uk/

Today I received my kit and I was most impressed with the excellent service and how well packaged the kit was. I've read on another site that the packaging is almost Apple like in it's presentation. Here's a shot of what greets you when you open the box.

On examination the bodyshell (Which is 3D printed) and the etch supplied are crisp and clean. I wouldn't envisage any problems with what in theory should be a quick build. Here's a few more images of the bodyshell and etch. There is also a set of Greenwich couplings supplied too.

The bodyshell is designed to go over a Kato 11-104 'tram' chassis which I've ordered from Gaugemaster.

I'm debating on what colour to paint it and in true WT spirit it's a toss up between green or blue. These loco's in MOD service appeared in hi-vis yellow but they are now appearing on preserved lines having been sold as surplus to requirements with MOD rationalisation.

At the moment blue appears to be winning in my instance though and I'm tempted to go with S&DJR Prussian blue with yellow buffer beams. To go with the naval theme I've ordered a set of custom plates from Steve. My loco will be called 'Tamar' and may have worked at the RNAD at Ernesettle.

The loco will them provide some motive power for a small OO9 layout representing a preserved line set in the South West that I have planned in the future.

I'll post some progress shots soon.

Cheers,

Mark

I really like the presentation, it is always an encouraging sign. What is the print like?

Morning Guv,

Yes your right. Steve has really thought about the presentation of the kit and it does ooze quality.

Likewise, the print quality of the body shell is superb and will be rewarded with careful finishing and painting.

Might do a bit on this kit today along with my Brian Madge Quarry Hunslet 'Velinheli'. Hopefully some progress shots later.

Cheers,

Mark

Good Evening,

Made some progress on this RNAD Baguley-Drewry loco this morning. Here's a few photographs of progress so far:

NPRNADBG99 Part 2 002.jpg

Once I've received the chassis I'll see if there's space to add some cab detail.

Other than the etch itself I've added two small handrails either side of the door as per prototype photographs and put a pseudo pin in both coupling/buffing units.

The loco has been sprayed with Halfords primer ready for painting. Livery will be black skirts, red buffer beams and Prussian Blue bodywork.

I will start spraying tomorrow and making up the windows.

Hopefully an update soon. This has been a lovely project to do and I'm looking forwards to the finishing this loco.

Cheers.

There seems to be quite a lot of stepping on the print, are you going to try and smooth that before continuing? Glass fibre pencils seem to work quite well on the Shapeways FUD, although I'm not sure what material has been used for this kit.

Yes would have to agree with you on that point, however its not helped with the close up shots over emphasising the surface. From normal viewing distances the bodyshell looks good. The plastic used is a type of ABS according to the instructions.

I won't do anymore with this kit but thanks for the tip with regards to the glass fibre pencil. May try this on another if I build another one.

The Kato chassis arrived this morning and after cutting the veranda ends off just pop's nicely into the bodyshell. Weighted with 20g the loco runs nicely up and down my test track.

Update soon on from the paint works.

Cheers,

Mark

Well, I'm very impressed with this loco . . . .

What I want to know is, does it win the 'fastest loco build ever' prize?

(I like small diesels!  )

Evening Ian,

Thanks for your comments Ian.

Sadly work has got in the way of any further progress so the attempt at fastest loco build ever as fallen by the wayside.:))

Also I've been test running her too. The Kato chassis runs very smoothly.

Update soon.

Cheers,

Good evening.

Considerable progress has been made in the past few days on this beautiful little kit.

Firstly, I've made flush windows out of a CD box. Thankfully Steve has been very thoughtful in the kit instructions and given the dimensions. After cutting out and trial fitting the windows were polished with one of those 4 sided nail buffer things. then they were dipped in Johnson Klear and left to dry.

The photo below shows the finished result as well as the driver figure-sourced from a Bachmann packet of 1950's loco crew. I've repainted him with Valejjo acrylics and given him a wash to bring out the detail on his face. Being a preserved line I think I can get away with his apparel.

Also shown in this photo is my attempt at preshading which normally works really well on wagons and NPCS I've done recently. As you'll see later on it wasn't successful this time around.

NPRNADBG99 Part 3 002.jpg
Here's 'Tamar' with red buffer beams which where then masked with Tamiya tape and Blu-tac.

NPRNADBG99 Part 3 001.jpg
Valejjo 'Prussian Blue' was then sprayed on to the body before masking off the blue and spraying Tamiya 'NATO' black on the skirts.

NPRNADBG99 Part 3 004.jpg

Detail painting was carried out and details were picked out. I've scraped the paint off the nickle silver window surrounds on the cab sides as per prototype photos. The beautifully etched 'Baguley-Drewery' nameplate that Steve includes in the kit was painted dark grey before scrapping the paint off the raised detail with a cocktail stick. This has come up superb.

NPRNADBG99 Part 3 006.jpg

I wanted to give 'Tamar' the look of a loco recently out of works. I've sprayed a coat of Klear on her to give a satin finish. Going to let her dry overnight then in the morning apply some light weathering mainly to the buffer beams/skirts and the exhaust area before sealing it all with a light wash and a coat of matt varnish.

NPRNADBG99 Part 3 008.jpg

Then it's just a case of fixing the windows in, adding the seat and the driver and fixing the roof on.

Another update (Hopefully finished except 'Tamar' nameplate) in the next few days.

Cheers,

Mark
