Neil's New Year Workbench

Well I hope that you all have had as productive a Christmas as I have. Mrs R and I living the best part of 200 miles away from the family have to be self sufficient when it comes to Christmas entertainment. Hasn't the telly been pants this year.

Anyway in the immediate run up to Xmas, I tidied up the playroom. It had got to such a state that it inhibited work. Here it is with the purple bookshelf moved to back onto Morfa and a tall cupboard cascaded from the kitchen taking its place along the wall.

I've managed to loose the new bathroom suite, which has allowed table chairs and a chest of drawers to be tucked under the layout. Now there's space for all my debris to be put away, and some spare to allow for future accumulations, hurrah.

All this means that I could start work immediately on the kit I got for Xmas.

It's a card fold up model of a cat, the head moves and it looks almost as stupid as our real puss. I had it finished in time for Christmas dinner. After dinner I slapped a coat of emulsion over the downstairs bathroom ceiling (told you the telly was poor).

I've also dragged a couple of items out of the stalled projects drawer. The first is an ex-LMS van, the body being given to me a couple of years ago. I fitted some diagonal bracing then put it to one side to gather dust. Yesterday I sorted some underframe parts out. Not having any 9' underframes I've hacked the middle foot out of some 10' LNER pattern ones. You should be able to make out the splice plate in the photo. I'll fit V hangers while they're still unattached. I hope to get the model on its wheels over the next couple of days.

Last but not least here's a blast from the past. Years ago I decided I'd chop a Triang BG down to scale length. I cut up the sides, stuck them back together then stopped. Today I've dragged the sides out and wafted some primer over them to see what needs attending to. There's some filling and sanding to do but otherwise the main work lies in cutting and shutting the underframe and roof to match.

Nice to see I'm not the only Triang Kit basher  & yes the TV has been cr@p............. we seemed to get more choice when we had 3 or 4 channels  :vista:

Couldn't agree more about the TV - oh look you have an icon for it  :vista:. But we shouldn't moan - my misses is far more tolerant of cr*p TV than am I, so between 7 and 9pm when all those dull soaps are on I get to go free and retire to my workshop for an evenings real entertainment. So all in I'm in favour of paying a high licence fee for very little in return!

not seen much TV this year spent most of it socialising and eating (picture the scene a rather stuffed portly person lying on the settee snoring) the only bits I have seen so far are the Family guy rip off of star wars (really funny) and a few war films, yawn

You are right about the telly. I was given the very excellent book Festiniog Odyssey by Nick Curtis for Christmas and ever since I've been wishing I'd had nothing to do with O gauge but built a nice model of a complete railway!. Mind you it took him 38 years but what a layout!. Definitely in my top 10. Sometimes I would like to get away from 7mm altogether and try something else. Trouble is with so much stuff it would be very difficult to change now plus I'm not far off being an OAP. Oh well, c'est la vie as they say!

Well I've got the van up on its wheels at last. Some of the delay being explained by the four piece solebar. You should also be able to tell that I've had to cut V hangers of yet more spare sprues from my scrapbox.

Here it is right way up.

So far there are bits from five kits incorporated into this one model.

An update and a request today.

As you can now see the van now sports both brakegear and a roof. Now while I can find good photos of the side and underthingies I'm really stuck for a good view of the roof. From what I've seen it looks as though the roof is steel too. There's the hint of some strapping in one photo, but it may be an illusion. Can anyone help me out with a picture or diagram?
