...last bit before Kettering. I have opened up holes for the wash out plugs and made some from 1mm square bar. The real things are attached to the boiler some way below the clothing, so half etched ones just don't do it for me. The boiler has slots cut in the clothing in two spots on the bottom. The boiler has intermediate support brackets mounted on the tops of two of the frame stretchers. This is where they attach to the boiler.

Not sure whether this is of any interest to anyone but clicking on the photo below will take you to my Flickr account with lots of pictures of the early stages of my previous 3 Princess builds. I have just found them hidden on a long lost memory stick. They are of the early chassis stage of the build and give some insight into the work involved in batch building 3 models.

Nick

I can't seem to get to the Princess photos, it keeps coming up and saying these are private and I do not have access.

Thanks

Richard

.....the project has been delayed slightly in the last week or so by another problem with the firebox. I ground the necessary material off the splashers to make the boiler and smokebox fit nicely, but to my horror the firebox front was not parallel to the cab front. After the last surgery it was vertical but at a slight angle to the cab front. More surgery, pinning and glue. I used the epoxy resin glue for the filler and all went surprisingly well!

Too mean to buy some!

You can take the lad out of Yorkshire, but you can't take Yorkshire out of the lad :p

Have to confess I've done the same, but in addition I soldered a strip of scrap etch half the wire thickness next to the wire to get and even flat edge, my filing skills are not up to Nicks quality.....it's important to know ones limits ;):))

Nice job on the firebox, can't see the joint at all

Nice idea Mick!

Incidentally had to do something similar the other day for some quad for the ring behind the smokebox on the buck tanks, filed down from half round..

Bent the half round to the required diameter-ish, soldered to plate and filed back. Looks a million dollars compared to using normal rod and back filling with solder..!

...a bit more progress. I've made good the firebox, and fitted up the boiler. The ashpan castings were a bit poo and needed a lot of mods to make them fit properly (and some extra detail too!) The boiler still needed a lot of alignment to make it fit properly, lead weights etc. Some of the large components in this kit are not of the required standard and it's sucking some of the building pleasure away. Again I keep thinking 'If only it were an MOK or Finney7....'

All the same, it's still looking good, as we say round here, nice job putting lipstick on the pig :p

I think if I diverted to LMR projects I'd be 'spoken to', mind gotta catch me first ;)

The more I see of these big un's the harder it is to put the lid back on

I am not responsible for anything West of London ;) and yes you're right there is a lot of it kicking around, but you have to ask yourself why  probably because it's popular and tills like popular I'm afraid, especially if you're business orientated :D

None the less, I have some ER stuff coming down the line and do wish to head to the wetter side for some big stuff later on.

At a rough guess I would say out of every 10 paint commissions about 5 are GWR or BR Western. Suppose they pay the bills:thumbs:. The red frame era seems to be the most popular which most of your range covers nicely

...I have fitted up the front centre platform/air scoop. The hinge between the two halves footplate sections is a 0.4 mm tube with 0.2 mm rod and the props are scratchbuilt. The footplate was lowered to allow access to the smokebox door for cleaning. The loco however always ran with the front section of footplate raised to (presumably) act as an air-scoop, channeling air through the oil cooler below.
