outside cranks

Does anyone have experience of building an outside crank loco in S7. I’m thinking of building a Slater’s Kirtley 0-6-0 Goods. Any help would be appreciated…

It’s an 0-6-0, and so the wheelsets need to move sideways relative to the frames on a curve. The Slaters kit has a construction with a chassis inside the frames, and outside. I found this way of doing things does constrain any sideplay, and its something to be very aware of from the start of building.

Not familiar with the details of S7 but the track to wheel sideplay is much less than the generous allowances in GOG 0F or even 0MF.

It is probably worth drawing a plan/section on the railhead at your minimum curve radius, this will give a very clear picture of how much sideplay is required. Easy to do on CAD, rather more work on paper.

@ed-fielding fielding - It may be of interest to know there is a post on this site by @John Walker entitled:-

Slaters MR/LMS Kirtley 0-6-0 Goods (Johnson) 7L007

- which may well address some of your questions you might have as it was built to S7 standards to run on the Dewsbury layout - HMRS at Butterly.
