Its amazing what turns up on Youtube.
On New Years Day 1965 I visited the Penrhyn Slate Quarry, which for the quarry was a normal working day. Two steam locos were still in use in the quarry, OGWEN on the first level up from the main Red Lion level and CEGIN on a higher level. Steam working at the quarry finished shortly after that visit. After photographing those two I went down to the workshops and was surprised to see two locos, NESTA and GLYDER, freshly painted and posed together on the main line in the yard.
Enquiries revealed that a BBC film crew were due that afternoon to make a film about the locomotives, so I called back later to find the filming actually in progress. It was shown on the BBC programme 'Tonight'.
The programme was seen by an American antiques dealer who was touring the country looking for items to export back to the US and he subsequently bought six of the Penrhyn locos. All have since been returned to the UK.
