7mm Ressaldar's DM45020 ScotRail Inspection Saloon build

as I said on my 'Workshop' thread, I am covering this build as a separate thread.

This coach was, I think unique in having B4 bogies, where and when they were fitted, I do not know.

As can be seen, this required alterations to the solebars immediately above the swing links and on the face of it, should not pose too much of a problem to replicate on the model - if anybody has a square on elevation shot of DM45020 showing the bogie, I would be grateful of a copy, to ease the measuring problems. In later years, the window frames were replaced with what look like a stainless steel variety, but in all probability, were 'polished' aluminium - these post date the period to be modelled.

The basis of the model will be the Sidelines kit + a pair of Wayoh B4 bogies, fitted with Roxey Mouldings 3' 1" steel wheels. I have made the bogies with the exception of attaching the whitemetal 'overlay' as the swing links are not represented on the casting, so they need fabricating from some scrap etch or the like. The rest of the external features are fairly standard - roof mounted airhorns, ETH equipment and various electrical conduits and boxes.

I will post pictures of the kit contents later today.

cheers

extruded aluminium roof + lost wax castings for most of the fittings, the exception being the seats and the air tank

as I said earlier, this coach had B4 bogies and here are the Wayoh units - swing links still to add

As will be seen in the prototype photo, the end windows are slightly different to the normal D2046 in that the centre droplight has been replaced by a fixed window, matching those either side, so a careful bit of cutting, carving and soldering will be needed, in addition to the solebar strengthening plates above the bogies - otherwise I think it is a case of follow the instructions (for a change)

Hopefully the first progress report early in the week.

cheers

I enjoyed myself making up the brass element of the chassis and was pleased with the end results - they ran quite freely when pushed along the track. So, not having to rush things, I decided to leave putting the whitemetal cosmetic sides on until Sunday, especially as I had to think of how to tackle/make the missing swing links from the top of the casting.

Having completed the usual Sunday morning chores, I then ventured into the workshop to continue with the bogies, and before I started anything, something told me to check the wheel centres - 8'6" 0n the prototype = 59.5mm in 7mm - centres on the brass bearings = 59mm - I can live with that - centres on the whitemetal castings = 57mm - I cannot live with that:rant::rant::rant:

So on Monday morning I sent a polite email to Invertrain asking for solutions and received a reply along the lines of...when I took the range over.....................shrinkage in the casting process..........drill out the holes oversize........All much as I had expected:(:(:( So I commenced, very slowly, using a pin vice knowing the problems that can occur with drilling whitemetal and all was going well until............yes, I went right through the bottom (axlebox cover plate) :headbang::headbang::headbang:...........so that was that, I could not effect a repair that would have been acceptable to me, let alone the Client, so the whole shooting match has been put in a bag and will appear at the Bring and Buy stall at Gresford on 6th October (details of this meeting will be posted elsewhere)

I came indoors, checked for alternative suppliers and ended up ordering the JLTRT version (the GWR bogies for the H33 conversion went together really well so I thought - give them another chance), which with a bit of luck and a following wind, should arrive today. The added advantage is that the swing links appear to be part of the kit.

Watch this space.

cheers
