Richard's Workbench Mainly Class 37s At The Moment

Having been encouraged by others I have finally got round to posting a few pictures of what I am doing at the moment.
I am building a batch of 5 JLTRT class 37s, 4 in BR blue which will be 37065, 37226 both with skirts and 37228 and 37 255 both with cut away buffer beams. I am also doing Ben Cruchan for a friend which will be in 1990s green livery.

The main change I have made to the kit is to cvhange the resin bogie inner to an etched version with 3 axle beam compensation. The first one 37226 is almost finished and the bodies for the other 3 blue ones are painted as you can see in the followig photos.

No prizes for spotting the deliberate mistake.

Here's 37226 in approximately 1981 condition ie skirts and round buffers

Graham here's a picture of JLTRT door handles, sorry but I don't thave grab handles available to photograph at the moment as I'm in Chicago.

And finally for now something a little different a brakevan CAR, or an air braked brake van to everyone else. It has oleo buffers from MMP, not fixed in yet. and needs some air pipes attaching.

welcome to the madhouse - very nice batch of 37s there Richard, a 37 would suit me fine - I have made a start in as much as I have a full set of Large Logo transfers for 37057 including the 'unofficial' hand written name - Viking - all I need is the dosh to buy the kit.

regards

Mike

You lost one whilst taking the photos?

Richard, the resin inners... please put two aside for me, possibly collect at either next S7 meeting at Northwood or at Reading Trade Show.

regards, Graham

Fortunately no I still have the fifth one, the body shell is complete but I'm not painting it at least not yet.

I will have the bogie inners at Reading as its unlikely I will make Peter's meeting I only arrive back in the UK the day before and I doubt the boss will be too pleased if I immediately shoot off when she hasn't seen me for 2 weeks.
Please drop me a reminder a day or too before the show, I don't want to forget them.

Hi Richard, welcome to the forum.

I like your 37's. :). May i ask why you have not used the resin inner bogie supplied in the kit?.

I believe in the principle that having every wheel in contact with the rail at all times gives better running. You cannot achieve that with the resin inners and you can only power 2 axles as the centre wheels do not carry any weight. With my brass inner you get 3 beam compensation with all 3 axles powered on one bogie using Delrin drive. I can take some pictures when I get back to the Uk in 10 days time. I have used the same sysmtem for 2 class 40s and it works really well 3 beams giving you all 4 axles carrying weight, with 3 axles powered. All these models are Scale 7.

Before you glue the roof on the brake van, are you going to revise the rainstrips? I think it was Ian (Pennine) who once pointed out to me that the curve should be much shallower, and some were simply straight but fixed at an angle.

You have a good memory, that was way back:)

I'm a bit of a rainstrip anorak, I reckon the straight ones at about 30 deg are easily the most common pattern. I've never seen a set as sharply curved as on the kit (most other kits and RTR of this van are the same, up until the most recent Bach and Hornby models in 4mm), and frankly I doubt you'd get a batten to curve like that.

Not at all envious of all those blue EE's :)

It would interesting Richard to see one of your Heljans side by side to your JLTRT.

Hi Richard welcome aboard!:thumbs:

The deliberate mistake is not writing "Blue" as "BLUE" * - just to make it stand out, please Colonel Iploffy, annoy the Green Meanies, and remind everyone else which colour every self-respecting British Diesel should wear..... :D:D:D

* Post #7, this time....;)

:)):)):thumbs::thumbs::)):))

Hi Richard - influx of tractors on Croscombe then!

Before you glue the roof on the brake van, are you going to revise the rainstrips? I think it was Ian (Pennine) who once pointed out to me that the curve should be much shallower, and some were simply straight but fixed at an angle. Here's a couple of examples:

Thanks for That Adrian, I have been staring at pictures of brakevans most of this week and I never noticed it. Yes the rain strip will need to be changed.

I don't like to wast modelling opportunites even when I'm travelling, so I have been building a JLTRT CCT. I have alreday built one and I think this is a great kit, it looks right and goes together easily and you only need a few relatively simple tools to build, so ideal when travelling. Here are a few pictures of the underframe. It has all the essentials but it does lack some of the brake detail. I still have to fit the cross beams to the vacuum cylinders as I don't have any thick enough wire with me. I will also be making the axle at the dynamo end a rcoking one so that it has a degree of compensation. There are still a few other bits to fit as well that I should get done at the next stop.

By the time I leave Singapore on friday night I should have this pretty much finished from a constructional point of view and ready to paint when I get home.

I had the chance to try the latest Japanese bullet train last Saturday, they are very impressive running at upto 200mph, but it was £300 return to Kyoto and there are no discount fares its take it or leave it.

Here's a picture of the Shinkansen, then you get to see the real rail in the following images.
