Ross's Mth Lms Stanier Coaches

Modelling on a £1200 table.
Recently I purchased a set of MTH LMS Stanier coaches from the USA they were 3 rail coarse scale as all the finescale ones have sold out now. I got a set of 4 in BR maroon and a separate 50' BG for Phill, got stung for import duty too so beware of that one as I was'nt! :'(
Still not bad money they stand me at £90 a coach....
I've started to re-wheel them using some finescale coach wheels from Easybuild. Putting the larger wheels on created a ride height issue as the coarse wheels were much smaller (prob about 3' in scale) Both the finescale and coarse scale use the same bogies but different depth pivots which are'nt available separetely so I've made my own, they seem to do the trick... A couple of other things I'd like to do to them are paint the ends black and fit some flush glazing which will improve them considerably (sides are a little chunky) You get a 50' BG and 3x 3rd opens in a pack so ill put 3 link couplings on the BG and Kadee's on the 3 other ones with 3 links at each end....

HI Ross £90 is still cheaper than the cheapest over here ,I was under the impression that mth do a trade in on the 3 rail corse sets for their 2 wheel fine scale wheel sets

Yes they do but its quite pricy, I sold all my coarse wheels on ebay, put them on some B4 bogies off some bigbig mk2's and got a tenner a pair (4 axles) for them... Wheels from Easybuild are approx £3 per axle and the pivots cost pennies to make up from plasticard... Ross...:D

Hi Ross,

I have PM'd you about this;)

What are you going to run them behind? Will it be a Hogwarts special:D??

Are you going to run the BG with a PLV/GUV and a CCT?

Any thoughts about realigning the brake shoes with the wheels? Will your use of KD's close couple enough for the corri connections - I notice that MTH have made the headstocks so that they will take 3 links or KD's (nice facility:thumbs::bowdown:).

I have the BG and Open 3rd in LMS Maroon, so the BG will probably end up in Corporate Blue - both look very pretty in LMS Crimson though:D

Making up Flush glazing could be a chore, but hopefully we will see some flush glazing kits soon, also there's a rumour that a Corridor Comp and Brake 3rd(??) may be on the cards from MTH?......

Does anyone know when the Open 3rds came off of the books with BR - did any ever appear in blue grey at all?:confused::)

ATVB

CME.

Hogwarts maybe???? Bit of a whim purchase really, they definately need the flush glazing, would like to get some of the other diagrams if they are going to release them? Ill not be doing anything with the brake shoes, but I bought a fold up etch battery box from sidelines for the BG as there isnt one on it I'll also be trimming the stepboards down on the BG, intend to close couple the coaches using kadees and will put 3 link couplings at the rake ends (might put 3links on both ends of BG) Think only BG's survived into blue era but stand corrected if anyone knows otherwise....

Ross.... ;)

you should know Ross by now he's always under the bonnet of the ALL agro to be modelling:))

Too funny:)) Car running great at the mo... I really do need to get my modelling mojo back on track... Unfotunately my little 19 month old has other ideas
We'll get there, not a great deal to do on these, I bought a fold up etch battery box for the BG and some card corridor connectors from Sidelines last Telford, I bought the card ones as I'm not keen on the rubber ones.. Need to make some new pick-ups for the interior lights as mine were 3 rail and had centre pick ups, then re connect all the wiring back up... I'd also like to spray the coach ends black as they are maroon at the mo and this is'nt right. And then there is the problem flush glazing to address....
Ross
