If you are planning sound I have today heard the best steam sound in an 0 gauge loco I have heard yet. The decoder was a Zimo 645MX and the speaker an enormous Tang Band speaker model T1-1942S. It filled the tender of an LMS 8F 2-8-0 but would go quite easily in the 36 class tender. Much more bass frequency. Incidentally the loco also has DCC controlled smoke well synchronised with the chuffs along with DCC control of the safety valves blowing off and drain cocks with escaping steam. Steve Baldock who posts on here (and plied us with chocolate cake) demonstrated these. Great model making from a master.

I actually build my own sound projects and have recorded 3642.

I use ESU decoders and have a very different drive template which I have created over the years. It makes operating the regulator much more realistic.

I am hoping that by having the space to add larger speakers will enhance the sound. Another bonus of the larger scale I guess!

I have thought about smoke and will check out Steve’s 8F.

The 36 project was recorded a few years ago and my other projects have surpassed it in quality.

I am planning on strapping the mics onto the 36 again during our upcoming steam season. I would like some more chuff recordings.

The following links are my latest efforts. The locos in the videos are fitted with ESU V4 decoders and Zimo Sugar Cube speakers in the smoke boxes.

Btw the 13 class is running my 30t class project. I am still finishing my 30 class.

Hi John,

I just ordered some varying sized Tang Band speakers to try the out.

I am a fan of having the sound coming from the front end of the locomotive but with more bass the speaker position may not be as critical?

Plenty of room for the big 5 1/4" speaker in the 36 class tender (and in my 50 class Commonwealth tender). You could put a small tweeter in the smokebox to make the sound appear to come from the right place

David, I've been to David Peterson's a couple of times and his 7mm models are finescale rather than S7, if I remember correctly. His 12 class kit was definitely finescale. If I may ask, what is your modelling focus?

I bought one of David Peterson’s 12 Class kits. Still just sitting in the cupboard. A few years ago I went to an Early Days seminar and if I remember correctly David had a C79 version half build. I may be wrong but I thought it was being built to S7.

You may well be right about the C79 conversion. I have seen his partially-built models, but I'm not whether they are S7 or not! The flanges looked finescale to me. Next time I see him, I'll ask.

I see the tweeter being necessary for the higher pitched sounds such as the whistle shrill, turbo generator whine, air pumps and ancillary escaping steam noises/hisses etc.

The larger Tang Band speakers are good in a steam locomotive as the bass response of these is ideal for reproducing the deeper Whoomph, Whoomph (if that's the right term - it's hard describing the sound!) as the locomotive begins to move, which some of the smaller speakers lack.

Albeit a diesel this is what I did with my P48 Atlas Dash 8-40B - and apologies for the slight diesel diversion :).

The large upright speaker is a Tang Band T1-1931s and I installed the smaller Tang Band T1-1925s in the fuel tank (just visible through the hole in the floor). The smaller speaker acts as a tweeter which I now find necessary (and install where space allows) for the higher pitch sounds of the horn, turbo whines and dynamic brake whines. I also try and match the speaker to the engine note - here the larger speaker suits the chug chug of a GE engine. For the record the decoder is an ESU Loksound L v4.

My 7mm modelling is late 1800s NSWGR. But after mostly finishing a 16 class I started a 5" gauge 24 class because I don't know any 7mm modellers and I know lots of 5" gauge modellers so it's easier to get help and motivation! I got stuck on the valve gear and handrails of the 16 class. I can't figure out how to make the handrail brackets and the curved component for the die blocks had me a bit stumped too. I also have a nearly finished funeral van.

I'm hopeless at finishing projects so I decided to not work on anything except the 24 class until it is finished. You can see a build thread about it at rmweb. It's running on air and I finished the boiler a couple of weeks ago so it's basically detail from here on in.

When the 24 class is finished I might try a 1/32 loco. I was thinking an H class until I studied the footplate :-\ I like the look of the old Baldwins too so one of them is on the want to build list.

You tender is a work of art - museum quality.

David Peterson models to S7 standards but he may have had a 12 Class build in finescale for demonstration purposes.

Linton - The 12 class kit was designed by Dave Sharpe of MOK so should so together like a dream. I have one waiting to be built but there's too much unfinished to start another one.
