Inspired by Mike Osbornes wagon build I though that I would give it a go .So with the few bits of plastic arid that I have I made a start .Let me just say that this is nowhere near as good as Mikes work but it is taking shape .Its not perfect and I think I will do better next time

Good for you.
Once it gets into revenue service it will get knocked about, patched up and dirty, then there will no faults in the build.
And please remember even the most accomplished modeller had to build the first one.

Although I'm not an LNWR aficionado it certain looks like a very good first scratch build John. I think we can be over critical of our own work sometimes, that said if this is your first then the next should inspire you to build more.

Looks good and a good prototype to start with, LNWR's habit of using screws to fix the corner plates instead of bolts helps cut the number of tiny cubes of plastic to add. Like most things, scratchbuilding just takes practice to improve. And the materials are cheap so it doesn't really matter if things go wrong sometimes. There is a great sense of freedom in being able to make what you want rather than relying on a kit being available.

John, I am pleased you have taken the plunge. It is a great feeling when you complete your first scratch built wagon or any other model for that matter. I first started making models over 50 years ago and building 7mm wagons from scratch over 40 years ago. Sure you will make mistakes, I still do on a regular basis.
I was lucky in 1985 I got a job which left some down time in the working day. This was not always the case, some days there was none but some days there was plenty. For the first couple of years I did what the fella's did and sit and read or play cards untill I realised that if I took a few bits of plastic and some hand tools I could build models and get paid for it as well.
I got my leg pulled before I was left in peace. The down side was my workmates would bring all there broken items to fix because this bloke makes things.
I am building a pair of Dia 13 timber wagons at the moment that are nearly finished.

You'v done better than my first build John. That was also a 7mm LNWR D1 in about 1968. But I cut the floor too short and it ended up as a D12 timber wagon!

They look great. The only problem is that I only have one set of axle box castings left. I did contact the guy you recommended and he is going to do some for me.

John, it looks pretty good to me. Your build has really inspired me to have a go at scratchbuilding my own wagon - I've got a set of ABS W-irons which need using up. Never done a scratchbuilt wagon before so please keep posting your pictures for more inspiration.

Hi Mike thank. I have to say that I am rather surprised that this has had as much interest as it has. Its worth having a look at Mike Osbornes thread on Rmweb as it really is a good read

Hi I had to take the sides off and do them again as although I had cut them correctly after I had sanded them to get the wood grain effect they ended up being to narrow .

What size plastikard (depth... width... ) are you using for the sheeting, the floor, the solebars... ?

Hi Graham happy easter. I have no idea what size the sheet of plasticard is other than it's the same thickness as the wagon sides on the kit D1 that I recently made. The sole bars are I think evergreen item 168

Looks very good . Once you've sat down and achieve something like this it's so satisfying.

Other than some buildings several years ago, more recently I scratch built this vehicle. The body is built up from iron-on wood veneer and the chassis from styrene. (apologies for not being LNWR . Description is here from post #12 on.
