HO Some British H0

Having been gently persuaded by a local friend to try H0 for my Scottish micro layout project Dounreay, my first task was to see what was available and how usable it was.

Coaching stock first - The 1970 ScR Passenger Working Book showed that Far North workings needed BSK, BCK, SK, CK, RMB and BGs, all Mk1s, so that meant Lima or Playcraft/Jouef.

Playcraft are underlength and underheight with crude underframes and lacking/simplified detail.

Lima Mk1s are the right basic dimensions, some minor detail issues (bogies & gangways), undersized windows and limited to 3 types - BSK, CK, RB.

Lima it is, then! Acquired quite cheaply were a selection of coaches and my initial work was cutting & shutting 4 BSKs to give a pair each of SK and BG. Fairly straightforward

What to do about those undersized windows though? Discussion with another friend prompted me to finally unbox my Silhouette Portrait cutter and look at its possibilities.

Drafting up a 'seed' file of Mk1 side components (windows, doors, etc) was easy enough, then its a case of copy/paste in the right order onto a side template and cut the side in 10 thou plasticard. I also added the Mk1 gangway rubbing plates to resolve that issue.

In fact, my sides are 2 layers of 10 thou - the inner has full toplight/droplight detail, the outer has simplified window frames, door seams, hinge positions, etc. Laminated together gives a 20 thou-thick side with a bit of 3D effect.

The Lima core has all the side detail sanded right back, new windows opened out as required and the new sides glued and clamped in place.

Looks the part and quite cheap too - I get 2 coaches-worth of sides from a sheet, so about 25p per coach. Door furniture (hinges, handles, grabs) is all simply microstrip, usually 10 x 20 thou Evergreen.

I ended up drafting about 20 Mk1 designs - first and second opens, compos, brakes, restaurants, buffets, sleepers, npccs... all shared via the British 1/87 Society's groups.io site.

Bogies next. Discarded all the Lima undersized B4s and made my own. 4 scale length BR1 sideframes cut & shut from 8 Playcraft shorties to use as masters for resin copies. The mechanical parts are layered 80 thou plasticard to suit the OO 12mm disc wheelsets scavenged from various places. Internal bearings with the pin-points cut off.

Paint, glazing and decals to finish, a mix of maroon and blue/grey as appropriate for the era. Kadee scale-head couplings (#153 or #158) and away we go!IMG_20220313_165103.jpgIMG_20221229_213118.jpgIMG_20230205_130340.jpgIMG_20230618_095440.jpg

The same technique can also be used on the Rivarossi 'H0' (ish) LMS coaches - a rather warped/damaged one is part-way to becoming a 50ft Full Brake, luckily the most warped bit was the 10ft section removed from the middle. New Silhouette-cut sides on a smoothed down core.

And a couple of scratchbuilds - a pair of ex-SR 4-wheel PMVs in plasticard and many, many lengths of microstrip.

One finished in green, the other blue.

A Bogie B van is underway using the same technique, this will ride on a pair of the Fleischmann SR 8ft bogies from their Bulleid coaches.

The Thompson BZ is a 3D print, one of Jonathan Duffett's designs shared on Thingiverse.IMG_20220428_135454.jpgIMG_20220501_193456.jpgIMG_20230124_085016.jpgIMG_20230805_124121.jpg

Turning to freight stock - the Lima 12t van is very usable with a little tittivation, as are the BR and GW brake vans. The 7-plank open is stretched to fit the 17ft6in steel chassis, but that chassis is usable.

The Playcraft wagons... We'll just largely ignore, too long or too squashed in the body, though again the chassis are adaptable and usable.

Lima vans can have new ends for the GW type, or cut & shut with some replacement strapping to make Shocvans. Take all the side detail off and put new overlays on for LMS or LNER sliding door types, or a Vanwide.

I used a couple of long-OOP society kits as masters for resin-casting 16t mineral bodies, these go on shortened Lima chassis. Likewise 13t opens.

Scratchbuilt plasticard bodies on various Lima and Playcraft underframes gives me Lowfit, Conflat, Grampus, Plate and the LNER Tube.IMG_20210201_231954.jpgIMG_20210327_114208.jpgIMG_20210903_173033.jpgIMG_20211109_131142.jpgIMG_20230207_134342.jpgIMG_20230210_093813.jpgIMG_20230218_125218.jpgIMG_20230218_145731.jpgIMG_20230218_145803.jpg

Another scratchbuilt body, LMS 20t brake van on the Lima chassis. Evergreen #2067 provides ready-made 6in planking in H0.

Evergreen 3.2mm C channel is also very useful for solebars generally, curb and end rails for BoBols - some Bolster Cs and an E, plus a Salmon.

And lastly a full scratchbuild, LNER Diagram 134 Insul-Fish conversion.IMG_20230216_163431.jpgIMG_20230216_183128.jpgIMG_20230618_100520.jpgIMG_20210201_205927.jpgIMG_20230207_134351.jpgIMG_20230603_132329.jpgIMG_20230605_141118.jpgIMG_20230611_224738.jpg

There are some useful 3D printed bits n bobs for H0. A friend rescaled some buffers and Gloucester bogies to H0 for me, along with his 1/102 16t min and I've had a couple of Jonathan Duffett's designs printed, including the 21t min (which certainly beats hacking the Playcraft one into a dozen pieces and then taking out a mm here and there before sticking it all back together again...) and Palbrick.IMG_20201230_222823.jpgIMG_20201230_222910.jpgIMG_20230126_094251.jpgIMG_20230210_151451.jpg

And finally (for the moment) some motive power.

The Far North lines were solid Sulzer Type Two at the time I'm modelling, of both Derby and Birmingham variety.

Derby Twos (24/1s in new money) are Lincoln Locos 3D printed shells/tanks/bogie sideframes. Lenny now offers all his range in H0 as well as his traditional TT3 (and TT120 now, too)

To power my pair, I've hacked an old Roco DB V90/BR290 heavy shunter, as the bogie wheelbase is within a gnats crotchet of the 29.75mm I need for 8ft6in in H0. Add a second motor out of a demic Hornby 08 and I've got 2 mechs for the price of 1. Dounreay only has short trains, so the limited tractive effort isn't a problem.

The bodies have been 'Highlanded' with headlights, tablet catcher recesses and 5-slot boiler grille blanking plates. One in grubby green as D5114, the other blue as 5130.

A pair of Brum Twos (26/1) are under build, hacked out of Lima 33s, with 2mm out of the width (body is easy, cabs less so) and the cantrail grilles altered. These will probably have a much-modded Heljan 17 mech, 1 drive bogie in each loco, requiring another spare motor. Usefully, 8ft6in in 4mm is close enough to 10ft in H0.

Again, one will be blue full yellows (but not the cabside windows) the other scabby green half yellows.

There is also a Playcraft NBL Two, also slimmed by 2mm and awaiting Paxman rebuild details, even though they never worked the Far North.IMG_20230617_122117.jpgIMG_20230617_103133.jpgIMG_20220405_100905_1.jpgIMG_20220403_121947.jpg

Amazing work there. I love the way you’ve used the Silhouette to make coach sides. I’m always a sucker for a nicely modelled MkI!

A plea, though, from a long-time resident: please post the photos at full size. It means you can also add information with each image within your posts to explain further if required.

You can go back and edit your posts to make the images full size. Thanks!

Nice to see British HO - at least it means you can also run the cross channel Fährbootwagen (Rbmms-61, Rbmms-55, Hfs-12) produced by Liliput (and Roco).

My British HO currently consists of a powered Atlas Models AL1/Class 81 (using Hornby class 67 drive trucks) and a Fleischmann Warship re-powered with an all axle drive from a Roco V200. Plus five Lima Mk2s in the process of being detailed.

Thanks folks.

I like a modelling challenge, be it a new scale, country or railway of interest.

I could so easily have done Dounreay in OO pretty much straight out of the box, but deliberately opting for H0 has given me plenty of opportunity for modelling.

Much of that modelling is pretty close to that of my youth in the 1970s, where I recall cutting and splicing Triang Mk1s to get more variety, scratchbuilding new bodies for rtr wagon chassis and detailing/converting rtr locos. The main difference is I'm less cack-handed nowadays and have a few years experience to draw from.

As I don't really like modelling in the 'Mainstream', years ago I tinkered with British HO for a bit, mostly inspired by the work & writings of Chris Ellis, Editor of (Airfix) Model Trains mag & it's successors.

I had a Lima 33 on a Walthers Trainman FA chassis - the body fit the chassis snugly - IF you didn't narrow it!! Also a Roco 'Dutch 08' anglicised to a Class 11, and I butchered a Playcraft NBL to try & make a D63xx hydraulic, on a Mehano chassis.
Stock was mostly Lima, rewheeled with Roco wheelsets, and fitted with Kadee 'scale size' #58 couplers - this was due to my complete inability to make up some etched TT scale couplers (B&B I think).
I also got a Roco V60 to use the chassis for a Class 14 body kit that the British 1:87 Society were promising at the time, but the project fell through and I lost interest, moving to O Scale & selling the HO.
Only photo I still have is one I took on the layout I was building at the time; with the last few OO models I had, I took this to show the size difference between OO & HO, both of course, sat on 16.5mm gauge track....

Latest wagon build is an LNER/BR 13t steel high body on a Lima 10ft wheelbase chassis.

Sides and ends in black 20 thou sheet around an Evergreen 4067 planked floor, details from assorted microstrip and section.

Just need to add the wooden 'notice boards', finish the brake gear and add tie bars (this one will be from the batch with 4-shoe RCH vac gear)

Some more NPCCS on the bench, Mk1 GUVs and CCTs.

Silhouette-cut sides for the GUV and CCT, 3 layers of 10 thou @1laminated up. GUVs are on cut-down Lima Mk1 underframes, with my own cast scale-length BR1 bogies. The CCT is on a scratch chassis, need to add the cosmetic w-iron/spring/axlebox castings (more diy).
IMG_20240812_204002.jpgIMG_20240812_204024.jpg

And this evening at the club was spent making an end (common to GUV and CCT) which I'll use as a master for more casting.

IMG_20240812_204010.jpg

Another 2 CCTs and probably another GUV to do, but maybe in a few weeks.
