I'm about to embark on this project, but there are no usual disclaimers. I shall blatantly promote the kit as it will be produced by the Finney7 consortium and I know most of the members. And I might be able to blag some free stuff. Having said that, I won't hold back on what I don't like as most people know, I don't build kits straight from the box. I feel that the design comes from an era when every problem could be resolved by etching, however, the castings in the kit are top quality. More of that later.

A few hours work gets to this - and it's not invisible solder - I've not soldered it yet..

It must be well over 10 years since I built mine. The only areas that I din't like about it were the laminations to build the slide bars, a 6 piece lamination that is a nightmare to file smooth, and the ones for the springs. Other than that it was very enjoyable build.

Tony, and anyone else who has a Finney LNER prototype to build.

A tip on the slidebars. Clean the cusp off the crosshead slide surfaces individually before laminating them together and finally squaring off. Check with each crosshead slide lamination that you have taken just enough off and don't have a sloppy fit.

I think Tony will probably replace the main springs with castings - I did on my A3.

I'm fitting adjustable hornblocks, so I've modified the Finney ones by drilling and tapping the tops of the guides.



A quick check on my test reverse curves goes ok, it even works on 4' radius, although I will never be going that low:-

Which axle boxes are you using Tony? They're square all through, all of mine have a square part either side of the horn guide but then a rounded turret affair inboard, they work ok but the square ones right through look much better.

Those are standard Martin Finney ones that you could buy as an extra to the kit. I still have a few as they very useful for other kits.

Interesting, I used the Martin Finney ones on the Bulleid and I don't recall them being square all the way through? They're certainly not on the model at the moment, I'll have a rummage through my box of bits left over to see if I've got some then They're probably in a little bag in the bottom of the box and I've used Slaters ones from my collection.

No point changing now as the screws are all set for height and secured with Loctite.

the ones from the F7 horn guides/axleboxes bag for the 94XX test build don't have the extension tube on them and are slightly proud of the frames on the outside and flush with the horn guide inner edge on the inside.

The boiler and firebox wrappers fit perfectly, that is great design work. Here is the firebox. Many other kits I've had to fettle the boiler and firebox to fit properly. Spot the deliberate mistake - yeah - I used the washout covers behind the mudholes! Duh! Hey - we all make mistakes, they can be fixed. So they all had to be removed and cleaned up. I finally located the mudhole backs on the valve gear fret! Parts for each sub-assembly can be located on any of the frets. I shall be amending the instructions accordingly..

The exhaust ejector pipe runs underneath the rear frame extension and rises vertically under that horizontal rear plate. So I drilled and tapped the end of it after it had been formed, so that the rear truck can be removed.

I grew to like V2s after getting 'Main Line Lament' when it came out a long time ago. Colin Walker commented about the shape of the Gresley boiler. It has a very graceful shape, but full of power and is captured perfectly in this kit. It has fitted together very nicely.

Hello JB, no problem at all, just fed them through my GW rollers with one side tighter than the other..

Question: Does anyone know where the three pipes that come out of the rear ports on the atomiser go to?

I think they drop down vertically, then run horizontally and disappear behind the rising running plate. I've scoured all my books and have not been able to establish what they do exactly.

Yes they run down and along the footplate and go under it just behind the front boiler support, no idea what they do either.

The cab is pretty well done, I used Hobbyhorse cinder guards instead of the etchings in the kit. Its not fixed together yet - that is a task for today.


The cab roof is a little challenging due to it's complicated shape, there is a jig that is cut away afterwards to form it up. With care and time it comes together fine.


For curving small sections I use this piece of skirting board and some steel bar - it does the job nicely.

I've been offline for a few days, no heating, land line or internet - back to the dark ages..

I couldn't face the struggle with 6 laminations to make up the slidebars, so I ended up using a Ragstone upper slidebar with a modified DJH 9F crosshead with 1mm square NS section for the lower slidebars. I did use the splash shields from the kit. Yep - I filed the wrong side of one of the valve guides.

I persevered with the spring laminations and they came out ok. The brake gear is all etched. Given the choice I'd prefer cast components, but it all fits and will only really be seen in silhouette on a working loco in any case. Home made pick ups..
