Thinking about the lorry positioning, could some form of ir detection system that shows a green when the lorry is fully on the turntable?

We are going to try a simple LED in a tube set into the road bed of the turntable. If that does not work, a sensor may be an option, but the activation indicator has to be in the same filed of vision as the lorry.

I have now mounted the controller cable faceplate under the power shelf, along with the three long CAT5 cables. The transformer for the base station is also mounted on the shelf now, one less thing to pack and plug in.

All fitted. I had some angle brackets in stock, only one hole on the faceplate needed to be re-dilled to suit. The black cables go to the handsets, the yellow to the base station.

I cleaned up all the parts for the two wagons.
Started assembly along with Kadee mounting bolts (8BA).
Assembled along with 0.7mm wire where needed.
Got four Kadee No.5 coupler parts ready and assembled them.
Added 10 grams of lead weight.
Set up the couplers using Kadee height gauge and pliers.
Shown with our existing flat beds, this shows the extra space we have now, should make loading with the crane a bit easier.
They are now in the workshop drying after painting in primer. I did Maskol the wheels before priming. Looking at the label on the bottle, I have had this a while!

I thought we had pretty much done all we can with the layout until one of the team suggested, it would be nice to have an industrial chimney.
We mocked up a rough cardboard one and tried it behind the factories in the rear corner.
It will bolt onto the end rear factory. I don't need to model the top or bottom because it won't be seen from the front.
It also has to fit in the rear of one of the factories for storage during transport.
I carefully measured up (or so I thought) and created the AW for laser cutting.
A few hours later I had a kit of 2mm MDF parts.
I glued these up.
Bolted in place.
Then checked the fit for storage in the back of the factory, to find I had forgotten about the 4mm strengthening plate, aaarrrggghhh!
Back to the computer to alter the drawings and cut again.

With the Tonbridge show just a week away, thoughts have turned toward finishing the chimney to a useable state.
A coat of red primer has been applied. The chimney on the right is the incorrect one, but kept to be used for a practice finishing piece.
Various patches of colour have been applied along with a fine filler and acrylic mix for the mortar.
Excess filler has been wiped off.
A lightning conductor strip has been made from some flattened 1.5mm copper cable. Wall clips made from 0.6mm nickle silver wire. The odd shaped piece of wire is placed in the first drill hole, the conductor strip is then held against this wire while the hole for other clip leg hole is drilled.
A ladder is affixed to another wall using brackets bent from 0.6mm wire. The piece of 2mm MDF is used as a spacer while the brackets are glued.
A very simple jig was made the help with trimming the brackets to the correct length.
Held in a pin vice for cleaning up with a file.
Milk bottle caps come in handy for storing the brackets until they are used.
This how it fits to one of the rear factories. Still some weathering to do.
Sits quite nicely at the rear of the layout. It is surprising how it makes the layout look a lot deeper than it actually is, just 22 inches front to back.

With the Tonbridge show tomorrow, the layout was loaded in the trailer yesterday, the two new wagons have been weathered and the locos cleaned and serviced.
Show prep is not just the locos, the lorries and crane need checking over, lubricating and of course charging.
This Saturday at Tonbridge is just a one day show, for two day shows we charge the lorries after the first day as well. I suspect they could last two days on one charge, but do not want to risk it.

Work has resumed on the conversion to RC of the second Bedford TK.
Some of the bits that need work.
First up is boring out the rear wheels to 2mm and trimming the boss back by 5mm. I did this using a small lathe, drive belt removed and chuck turned by hand. Cannot do it powered, the drill would grab the plastic too easily. I only have the one set of wheels, so no margin for error! I had to fit a front tyre on the hub so it would hold central in the chuck.
I wheel done, one to go.
The two bevel gears were drilled out, one at 2mm for the axle, the other at 2.8mm for a snug fit on the motor shaft.
The two front wheels had the existing axle stub milled out. Luckily I had kept the piece of MDF with the screw clamp holes from previous lorry conversions. We 3D print new inner hubs which clip into the back of the wheels.

The bevel gear affixed to the motor output shaft. I roughened the shaft with a piercing saw, slid the gear onto the shaft, right up to the gearbox. Then a light smear of epoxy on the shaft, pull the gear back until until 1.5mm from the end, I do it this way round to prevent pushing epoxy into the gearbox, with spare epoxy spread around the protruding bit, hopefully it will stay put.
I now need to scratch build a new trailer utilising some of the parts from the box trailer.
Only a couple of weeks now until the Railex show 23–24 May. I very much doubt I will get the TK done in time.

True to form I did not get as much done as I wanted to before the Railex show this weekend. I did get the new brick wall part done.
Laser cut the wall from 2mm MDF and the railings from 0.9 Polybak.
I made a stand from scrap timber to hold the wall while painting etc.
This is where it will be sited.
Applied mortar and weathered the wall. Luckily found the original, railings wire drilling jig.
Railings support bars glued along with the pillar capping stones. Just need to glue on the railing and mount it on the layout.
Will be packing the layout up on Thursday ready to set off on Friday.
We will have Giles and Di helping operate over the weekend, do pop by and say hello if you go to Railex.

Oh they really are nice. I had a full size set made for my 1966 Anglia 105E HFS674D and they looked a treat on her too.
