I'm not quite sure when the tunnels were blocked, the Bath end of Devonshire Tunnel was the first, being back-filled with an odd "chimney" ventilator construction built up its face, early mid '70s I think.

Certainly we were walking through Combe Down unimpeded in our extended rugby avoiding "cross country" periods c 75/76.

I know what you mean about the canal, lovely and secluded with just the original towpath and dry after Dundas, up until the first big concrete re-lining c 77. I think I am right in saying that the canal towpath out of Bath was the very first project of who and what has since become Sustrans.

And then there was Harbutt's plasticine factory still going at Bathampton, difficult to imagine now.

Hi Simon,

Looks great. Will have to spend a day in the area soon and also visit a certain bookshop to part with some spondoolies.

:)
