7mm Welcome Wagons

Hi all,

My wife amazed me by including in my Xmas stocking a rather nice surprise in the shape of a Welcome Wagons BR 12ton Conflat 'A' (4 shoe) brass kit as sold by M&M Models. The only way I can think of where she got the info was when I was looking at their website and happened to mention that I thought I needed one as a match truck for my 03. Now that I have it in my grubby little mitts I am looking for some info;

1) What are Welcome Wagon kits like to build?
2) Are they a simple kit for beginners new to brass kits?
3) Is this kit accurate for an 03 match truck?
4) I'll gladly accept all info and pointers :p

As number 4 says I'll hapily accept all advice and guidance so that hopefully I can put my new soldering station to good us and finally make a start into the world of brass kit building,

Cheers,

Mark

I have a couple Hybars of theirs. I haven't started building them yet but they look nicely etched and all the castings are crisp and clean. There were a couple build threads on RMWeb of different prototypes but they were too new for my interest. All the builders compliment the kits so appropriate or not it should be a good build.

I am half way through one of their BR 12T pipe wagons and to be honest I am not that impressed, the white metal axle boxes are solid with no witness marks for drilling out to take the bearings.

All the brake detail is in w/metal which is a shame as there is loads of space left on the etch sheet to have done the brake gear all in brass.

The buffers are also solid w/metal which is a pet hate of mine and have been replaced with some sprung ones, this is as far as I have got so far but if you put on the extra cost of the wheels and transfers you maybe better off with the Parkside version.

Sorry for the sour grapes and this is just my opinion, I am just relieved that I managed to keep everything square being such a long wheel base and that the axle boxes are a bit hit or miss.

Martyn.

Mark -

Most of the 03 Runner wagons were I believe ex- Conflat L wagons.

Thanks for the input. I can't be too deterred as it was a gift and it'll be a good learning curve. I already have some wheels in the bits box and I'm more concerned with honing my skills rather than turning out a masterpiece. I'll make the wagon up 'as is' and it can go into the preservation siding :p

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Mark,

Sorry if I sounded a bit negative this is the first one of their range that I have built so I do not know if all their kits are of the same ilk, and I certainly do not want to deter you.

Hopefully you will put the build up on here so we can give you guidance if needed  , regarding the " brass side " of the build I found their etches quite thick so you will need to score the fold lines a few times before you make the bend especially with the sole bars.

Martyn.
