Sodbury Vale Model Railway Club's 32nd Annual Model Railway Exhibition will again be held in the fantastic setting of St Mary's Church and the Church Hall, right in the centre of Yate. an easy walk from the Yate Shopping Centre Car Park where there is plentiful free parking (max stay 4 hours). Please note that there is only disabled parking adjacent to the Church.

Open: 10.00am to 4.30pm

Admission: Adults £5 and accompanied children FREE.

Well the show is now next Saturday. Fingers crossed for some good weather.

Here's a suggestion for finding a parking space tomorrow. Since last year, some new retail units have been built on what was the old overflow car park to the east of the main shopping centre and they have been open for a few months. A new car park was built to go with these retail units. However, this car park is virtually hidden and is not signposted so it tends to be overlooked. I've made use of it on a couple of occasions and found it to be about half full when the rest of the parking in the shopping centre is full to bursting point.

Here's a map of central Yate with St. Mary's church in the top left corner.



The only access is by the road pointed to in the map, off the Link Road, B4059, and you get to this car park by driving between the end of the retail unit block on your right and a high fence on your left. Hopefully the car park hasn't got too well known and there are still a fair number of empty spaces available.

The weather forecast looks like a bit of rain in the morning, but the wind is from the east so no cold winter blasts blowing in through the church door. I look forward to seeing you tomorrow.

Another bit of model railway information - the car park is situated on the site of the first house I owned in Yate some years ago. It was demolished to make way for this car park. If you park in the middle of the site, you will be just about on top of the site of my part built garden layout.

The exhibition went well with the attendance figures almost exactly the same as last year. The weather wasn't too good, being a fairly damp, cold and miserable day throughout. I've included a few shots of some of the layouts attending. I wanted to take more shots but my camera battery went flat so prematurely halting my photographic efforts.


Peter Kirmond with his very impressive US O scale Laramie Engine Terminal. The pity is that the cosmetic drapes are hiding a baseboard sub-system which is every bit as interesting to layout builders as the modelling on the top.



At the other end of the scale was Ian Morgan's 2mm scale layout, "Freshwater", beautifully modelled with the usual excellent running shown by 2mm scale models.


Opposite Ian's layout was Maurice Hopper's S scale layout - "Tresparrett Wharf". The two main boards of this layout pack into a Really Useful box not much larger than a violin case and the hidden sidings and stock pack into another box about half the volume of the main layout box, so the lot is easily carried on public transport. This is a smaller development from Maurice's previous layout, "St. Juliot" which was also transportable on public transport, but the larger, backpack necessary had to be stored on luggage racks.

Alex Hodges, one of the Sodbury club members, exhibited his extensive N scale layout, "Greenmead". A feature of Alex's operation was to have something moving somewhere on the layout at all times during the exhibition. Assisting operators left the main line operation to Alex and limited their involvement to the branch line and the motive power depot.

It was an excellent day with no major problems for the organisers - planning for next year starts in a couple of week's time.

A really enjoyable show with lots of excellent modelling on display. Many thanks to all the host club members for looking after us so well. Tom has already asked if I will come along to fly the 2mm flag next year and I have readily accepted.
