Phill, the 'recruitment officer' directed me towards this site. I didn't know of its existence, I assume it's top secret by invitation only :)

It does explain why RMweb has gone a bit quiet - overcomplicated perhaps? There is much to be gained from relative simplicity, and it seems you've all been hiding away here.
Cheers for now.
Richard
Hello Richard
Nothing secret, we are just sticking to viral marketing :D Hopefully the site will strike a happy balance between simplicity, and friendly chaos [/quote:2q4rbu1b]
You mean it hasn't already...?!?

Yes welcome aboard, Richard, this is why it went quiet on RMweb! (it's own server problems aside...)

Hi Richard , and welcome also from me  As Cynric says " friendly chaos" well what he actually means is lots of pictures of projects lots of friendly banter and hopefully plenty of WR hydraulics  The chaos began when Jordan posted pics of his F word thingy's, thats when all hell broke loose  :shit:

'ere chaps I know why I am going to like being a member on here, look at the old site and they are openly slagging each other off about a plastic model of a new build kettle arguing about the resale value and again a mod has had to step in .

Any way I have been speaking to the domestic authority   and she in not so many words gave the green light to the resumption of major earthworks in the back garden(well she said the grass needs cutting)  .

Good luck with the earthworks, i spent yesterday afternoon moving about a ton of topsoil from a neighbours house about 300 yards away, into a new raised bed, roughly 40 trips with the barrow  and today I almost finished wifeys coldframe. I think its fair to say I have earned some brownie points!
We do like a bit of banter, after all it should be fun :D

I think you misunderstood my previous posting this was almost malicious and due to the OP being slagged off so much he asked for the topic to be locked. Thank god no such bad mouthing is allowed just good clean fun, I have no problems with banter at all I work for V##### Trains so I have to have a sense of humour everytime I announce arrival times. I like the original title of area 51 or perhaps we could call it the bermuda triangle or the tamworth triangle or even my finances at the moment (Black hole)

I think I said somewhere else it was Area 51 for Jordans SOO stuff, now the forum is evolving it seems slightly less appropriate :D ultimately its just a name, but i just wouldnt want anybody feeling that they couldnt/shouldnt post non WR content :)

Yes, but this is meant to be Western Region.

If you have more members with non WR leanings (myself included), and more non WR stuff is posted (which I shall try not to do), aren't you in danger of diluting what you originally intended, or just becoming a 'nicer' RMweb, maybe needing more moderation, requiring more of your time? I must admit I am a little unsure as to what the scope of this site is.

FWIW, I like 'Area 51' as a title. It made me laugh, and reinforced the impression, very nicely, that this was a WR site, and 'foreign' stuff should be shunted off to a dark and secret siding.

Regards

Richard

A very valid point and one which had crossed my mind. Yes it is a Western region site, and that is it primary purpose. However if somebody who builds a Tower Warship then wants to post some shots of an A3 then I think we should be able to accommodate it
My vision - such as it is - is for a site catering for a particular niche, but relaxed enough to allow the odd incursion of foreign railways.
I dont want this to become another RMweb, that is what RMweb is for. :D

Actually, thinking about it, if somebody joined and just posted shots of scratchbuilt Highland railway stock, I wouldnt kick them off  which is probably hypocritical, but I like to see good models.

Well Ian you must do what she say's "go outside and cut the grass and make some changes" ie; building work  tell her its improvments to the garden but tell her not to worry about understanding what your up to as its complicated, just wait till its done   If that fails run for cover :shit:

Actually I agree with Richard; I think "Area 51" is just fine as it is!! For myself, I didn't (and don't) intend to flood this site with non-WR stuff, it just sort of happened, as that's my 'other' interest which also happens to be larger in quantity than my UK O scale collection (at this point!)... and the back'n'forth banter with other members, without descending into vitriol & back-biting, has been part of the fun!! :p
As Cynric says;
I dont want this to become another RMweb, that is what RMweb is for. :D

Well thats all settled then :D it stays as Area 51, and everyone can use it as they see fit
TBH I dont mind what people post, or where (as long as it is legal!), but inevitably some form organisation is needed. its rather like sorting a book collection - do you file by author, publisher, subject, size, etc ........ or go for the totally random approach?

hello

Seeing as I've just had some wheels for a GER Lowmac rewheeled at Western Thunder's workshops (cheers Cynric), I feel both obliged and entitled to see what's occurring. And anyway, didn't that great GER loco engineer James Holden come from Swindon...

It's a shame that not too many GW vehicles wandered off home territory, especially into East Anglia, but the odd Syphon (or is it Python, well anyway some sort of Monster), appears in the occasional parcels train, so you never know...
