Edge Lane Junction (ELJ) is simple double junction in Liverpool situated just by Edgehill, The Grid Iron and Exhibition Junction. It handled most if not all Bootle branch traffic, including Aintree specials, the odd Blue Pullman, north docks traffic and local dmu services from Southport to Liverpool as well as light engine movements from sheds such as Bankhall and Aintree.
The layout...
I've been researching ELJ for about ten years now, building began originally in OO gauge using Peco streamline then I started again in EM gauge then about five years ago I upped the scale to 7mm. None of these ever really got past the laying of the junction stage and I moved away from the idea to build or start other projects. But the other month I decided I had to build it and finish it. This time it’s back to OO gauge but all track will be hand built using ply sleepers abs Exactoscale chairs. Templot was printed off and work has begun building track on the first section which contains the junction, trailing crossover and one of the catch points on a 6’ long board. The overall length of the layout will be 12’ x 3’ max at one end.
The layout itself is based in the mid 1960's with green and blue diesels working together and the odd steamer. My intention is to add as much small detail as possible with point rodding and signal pulley wires etc, the only difference from the original Edge Lane Junction is I've added a fictional slow line/avoiding line which joins us from Edgehill on the down main, this also has a a headshunt. The reason behind this is just to add a bit more operational interest and also this line will have OHLE for the of my AC locos.
Hopefully progress will be fairly quick time and work permitting so plenty of updates hopefully.
Here’s a link to some great pics taken of the original ELJ and some photos of the progress so far.
