With a 1/4 of Gresley Bogie pair (sort of 1/2 way through the first one) sitting on my workbench at the moment these shots are extremely handy, so many thanks!

I am just starting an Ian Kirk 4 compartment Brake Third as a sort of vanity project not being an LNER modeller - I used to travel in them to school in the fifties - but I am wondering were the underframes the same for the kit I am building as for this coach. I would love to be able to use these wonderful photos.

Hi Rob,
If it's a 61' 6" coach and a turnbuckle underframe example then yes it's probably the same. I believe that the general layout is the same for all 61' 6" stock but those with angle underframes may have slight variations due to difference between turnbuckle and angle and how they fit/attach to the underframe.

Surely a 4 compt brake third would be on a 51' underframe, although the best photo I can find to hand does show turnbuckle truss rods, which I think would be correct for all pre war Gresley stock. The Thompson post war versions had a 52' 2 1/2" underframe and angle truss rods.

Hi Martin,

Not necessarily, Diagrams 38, 39, 114 and 324 were all 61'6" 4 compartment brake 3rds

Great pictures Rob, thanks..!

Very sadly, I'll eat my hat if that ever gets restored.

We have two under wraps at Ongar, and they'll never be touched. Think they were looking at around £100k per coach restoration.

JB.

Rob, you'll want some 8'6" wheelbase sprung Bushell bogies then...?!

Yes, quite. I should have sorted out my vestibules before opening gob. Also sadly I have to agree with JB, we have two restored Gresley vehicles at Bo'ness that are a joy, but when you consider the time it has taken to restore them, the chances for anything in that state are slim.

Thanks very much for your comments and yes, Martin, it is a 51' vehicle. I have sent off for the Isinglass drawing and I am trying to find some photos of the vehicle but with not too much luck at the moment.

You might be right but I already have a set from you - if I can find where I put them! If I do any more such coaches you might be in for a sale or two. I suppose I could use them on LSWR/SR bogies as well. Mow there's a thought.

Another visit to Kirkby Stephen on Saturday gave me the opportunity to rummage around and under more teak coaches.

The first of them a Gresley 1906 BG which would have been built not long after he became Wagon and Carriage Superintendent in 1905.

The next photos for sharing are of a angle truss rod underframe which will show the layout in comparison with the turnbuck version that started this thread off.

Unfortunately I completely forgot to ask what was under the sheet but it seems that it's LNER - TK 3857 (which is owned by the LNER Coach Association).

Interestingly this one had a manual handbrake fitted while in departmental service (DE320946)

Fascinating photos Rob, thanks for showing them. I can quite see why there's some pessimism about restoration prospects as these are clearly not weekend quickies - that first 3 compartment brake alone is a serious project...
Mind you, the preservation sector continues to grow in popularity according to some, so perhaps funding will draw into the station one day?
