The Joy Of Sets (formerly Trumpet Blowing)

Hmmmm you have a point but I still stand by the comments I made, because history is being made right now. A lot of good worthwhile history was left out because of time restraints.

Well yes, but including the rise and fall of companies is falling into the realms of institutional history and, in the day job (jobbing academic historian),this is reckoned worthy but dull. On television, it's merely dull. A poor analogy follows: only yesterday we skipped a couple of hundred copies of volumes recording the development of Southampton's local government (we still have more than we'll ever sell should anyone be interested!). With Basset Lowke already part of the programme, how much more do you need? It's a perfectly respectable editorial choice. The previous 'Timeshift' programmes I've seen are meant as insights rather than comprehensive histories and are the better television for it.

A couple of reviews from the papers:

I like the Rice quote in the Guardian review by the way. Must sit down and actually watch the thing tonight.

enjoyed it, but as others have said, it would have been better if there were more programmes to follow.

The Grauniad gets my vote, the other bloke has slightly missed several points and is a bit on the irritatingly sneery side of things I think.

As Neil said earlier, an aspect of what it's all about for some of us is also the "Artistry" of the whole business. I am pretty certain that Maggie and Gordon's "Pempoul" is squarely in this camp and is up there with the greatest works of art in my judgement.

I'm pretty certain it hasn't pushed the couple over the invisible line that separates hobbyism from lunacy and am not sure what evidence the writer had for the thought.

On the other hand the whole hobby is gloriously barking at best so perhap's he's right - put me in with the lunatics please:p

I thought by the standards of newspaper TV reviewing the Telegraph was relatively tame compared to what it could have been. They tend to verge on the trite and kneejerk and well, that's what you get. You want to try A.A. Gill for the full smug and bombastic effect...

Both John Crace in the Guardian and the chap in the Torygraph made their preconceptions pretty apparent and wrote their copy accordingly. Like conference abstracts for academic papers, these things are almost never the product of deep thought so far as I can tell and it would be unreasonable to judge in that way. It's worth noting anyhow that the audience for these reviews is likely far smaller than the audience of the programme.

Is that with the Lunatics in the back row or with the Lunatics in the front row? :p

[apologies to any Lunatic in the front row who considers him/her self as a fanatic... accurist... stickler-for-detail.]

I wasn't keen on the Telegraph one... and why on earth have they got a picture where the model toy train is sat in the road...??!!??
Probably just to infuriate us 'duffel coats' (not even 'anoraks'??:() and because no one at the Telegraph could be @rsed to get a decent picture, like, maybe, from the program...

They were trying to model the scene from the Titfield Thunderbolt with the 14xx steaming down the road dont you know. :D

I thought the whole thing was rather well done. The concentration on Bassett-Lowke was interesting and I didn't realise what a great industrialist/socialist/entrepreneur he was.

Oh and I've got 'Look at Life - On The Railways' DVD to trawl through this weekend - Que sera!

I was most impressed, even my wife wanted to watch it, and she enjoyed the knowledgeable female input too. It's tough to produce a telly programme which will appeal to those with just a passing interest in trains as well as us loonies.

Waun Gron Park Halt is Paul Rolley's - he who posts here from time to time :)

Wow, as I scrolled down I wondered what a real photo was doing in a thread about toys trains? Seriously that had me taken for a while, I thought that'd make a nice model then when I scrolled back noted it already was LOL.

Still not watched it LOL, must make time tonight to see it.
