Hi, apologies for resurrecting this thread, but I've the same question. Can anyone confirm the font used for the Western nameplates.
I can't find the grotesque font that matches. The closest match I can find is actually BR own black font.
Could it actually be this and the grotesque is just a red herring?

you need to get hold of a copy of The Class 52s A Tribute to the Westerns by David Birt, published by OPC, ISBN 0-86093-424-1. In it you will find drawings of the letters, numbers and the plates on some Swindon drawings for a model maker. I would scan the book but the binding is very deep and any attempt to flatten it would break the binding.
